r/AskAnAustralian on Reddit: Meaning of the phrase "To be on country"
July 8, 2021 -
Hello everyone!
I am working on a translation now and would like to know what this phrase means. Is it somehow connected to the Aboriginal peoples? Thanks in advance!

Yes - it's usually something said by Aboriginal Australians when referring to their specific lands. When they're "on country" it means they're physically located on the traditional areas of their tribal group/s. "I look forward to welcoming you on country" - meaning, I look forward to your visit to my tribal area. I am not sure if it also applies to Torres Strait Islanders. They have a slightly different take on land and land ownership than Aboriginal peoples. Also note: don't use Native Australians. Use Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, or if you really must, use Indigenous.
