I am thinking of taking his basic survival course this autumn. I understand that there is a spiritual element to his teachings and I embrace that fact as, I too, share those beliefs and ideologies. However, I've read contradicting anecdotes relating to the integrity of him as a person and his courses at the tracker school. Just curious on what you all think.

I did a 2 week course with him in the Pine Barrens about 30 years ago. He said bring what ever you want. Then each day he took stuff away (put it under a tarp). Each day we replaced it with things we made. Debris shelter, fiber blankets, bowls, traps, fire making, rope making, knife skills, bow making, pottery, plant identification. That was the first week. Second week he gave back your stuff if you wanted it. We choose to live in our debris huts. Then we started tracking and nature observation, natural camouflage, stalking. We would be up at dawn and getting back to camp after dark. One morning we were out tracking deer, next we would be playing "follow the leader" thru the swamps with Tom as the leader. After that we would be tracking fox. Later, tracking lizards in the sand. It was almost dark and he still wanted to show us some new deer tracks. We were tired, sunburnt and had covered ourselves in mud and pine needles. Well, after tracking lizards in the sand. It was incredibly easy it to see the deer tracks going up over the sandhill in twilight. He was at that time a big guy and incredible strong. Reminded me of a Drill Sargent. He was into throwing double bit axes at the time. He could repeatedly hit a tall stump from 30' till it split. I seen him make fire a few ways. He put a piece of rope cordage over a tree branch. He grabbed each end and tried to saw the branch in half till it broke in half on both sides on fire.

Go ahead and take the course, it's not as if you would be brainwashed and suddenly be forced to believe and do everything they might teach. His basic course is quite solid from what I heard and if you don't like the ideology, then leave that there and take only the craftsmanship back home.
