As stated in Python's docs:

Floating point numbers are usually implemented using double in C

double in C is normally a 64-bit number (double-precision, as opposed to the single-precision 32-bit float type), and it's also known as float64. So, what we call float in plain Python is usually a 64-bit float, or torch.float64.

PyTorch itself, however, uses float32 by default. AFAIK, this is done to save memory: you'll likely be training models with quite a lot of parameters, and using 32-bit floats will take two times less memory than Python's 64-bit float.

Tensor To Float: Convert a PyTorch Tensor To A Floating Number Data Type
Now that the tensor has been converted to a floating point tensor, let's double check the new tensor's data type to make sure it's a float tensor ... We can see that the data type is now a "torch.float32" 32-bit floating point.

How to check if a tensor is a float/double?
All I want, is to check that the object is some kind of float such that I can perform floating operations on it. I was expecting there to be some kind of abstract base class above all float types that I could check. Something like: isinstance(x,torch.FloatTensor) But I haven’t found anything. October 16, 2021 - Plus, GPU can not process double precision very well. So FloatTensor is enough, which is also the default type for model parameters. You can use torch.from_numpy() method to convert a NumPy array to corresponding torch Tensor, which will share underlying memory with NumPy array.
