I’ve been using an app called VidScribe - it can pull transcripts from videos automatically, plus it makes quick summaries and other stuff. Super useful when you just want the key points without watching the whole thing. it’s iOS only though, but works great if you’re on an iPhone. Answer from dankohli on reddit.com

Is there a way to somehow get a transcript, let it be even auto-generated and in bad quality provided by YT, without using expensive websites which I just cannot afford? Saw some Chrome extensions of it but I'm afraid it can be a virus. Maybe, someone can suggest something free to recognize a transcript or any other way to somehow get at least auto-generated by YT subtitles? I'll be indescribably happy if someone helps me. Thank you very much.

r/SideProject on Reddit: I've Created a Free Tool for Extracting YouTube Transcripts!
July 26, 2024 -

I recently created a tool that makes it super easy to fetch YouTube transcripts, and I thought some of you might find it useful: youtube-transcript.io. It’s completely free and very straightforward to use.

Why I Built It:

I know there are more tools that do this, but I created this tool because I was searching for a better alternative myself. The existing options just weren’t cutting it for me. Plus, I’m planning to add more quality-of-life features in the future, so stay tuned!

Why You Should Check It Out:

  • Free Forever: Fetch the entire transcript from any video without ever having to pay a dime.

  • Fast & Reliable: Get YouTube video captions with just one click! Copy or download them as .txt, .srt, .vtt, or .csv.

  • Summarize with AI: Save time by reading AI-generated summaries of the video transcripts. Perfect for when you're in a rush!

How It Works:

  1. Enter the YouTube URL: Simply paste the URL of the video you want the transcript for.

  2. Get Transcript: Click the button and voila! The entire transcript is at your fingertips.

Try it Out:

Give it a try at youtube-transcript.io and let me know what you think. All feedback is welcome!

Simply upload media files or paste YouTube URLs, and let UniScribe handle the rest. UniScribe will provide you with a precisely transcribed text, an AI-generated summary, a mind map, and a list of key Q&As. It also supports exporting and sharing!

Earlier this year, I saved up some money and quit my job to start a barista FIRE lifestyle with my husband. Investment is a key topic in this lifestyle, so I searched for many videos about investment on YouTube. However, most of these videos are quite lengthy, which inspired us to develop a tool for quickly extracting information from audio and video files. This led to the creation of UniScribe!

And I just launched it on Product Hunt today ! https://www.producthunt.com/posts/uniscribe

Can't wait to hear your feedback! 🙏 Feel free to ask me anything!

r/youtube on Reddit: 3 Easy Tools to Transcribe YouTube Videos
May 18, 2024 -

I wanted to share three simple tools for transcribing YouTube videos. If you need to get text from video content, these options might help:

YouTube's Automatic Captions: YouTube provides automatic captions for many videos. Just click the "CC" button on the video player. You can then download the captions using third-party tools like DownSub or KeepSubs. This method is quick but may not be the most accurate.

Otter.ai: Otter is a popular transcription service that can handle YouTube videos. Upload the video file or link, and Otter will generate a transcription. It offers decent accuracy and useful features like speaker identification.

Vomo.ai: Vomo offers an efficient way to transcribe YouTube videos. Simply import the YouTube link, and Vomo will automatically transcribe the audio. It uses advanced models (nova-2 and Whisper) for accurate transcription and supports multiple languages. Vomo also provides a 7-day free trial and no limits on transcription time or quantity, with the added benefit of AI analysis using GPT-4o for summaries and action items.

Hope you find these tools helpful! If you have any other suggestions or questions, feel free to share.

I’m trying to grab the transcript from a YouTube video so I can summarize or review it later. What’s the easiest way to do this?

Edit: Thanks for the tips, everyone. Tried vomo.ai based on a rec, wasn’t sure at first but it worked really well for getting the transcript + summary.

r/indiehackers on Reddit: We made a simple tool that turns any YouTube video into a clean, readable transcript in seconds.

Hey folks! 👋

We’ve been working on a side project called YouTube Transcript Generator — a lightweight tool that helps you extract clean transcripts from YouTube videos instantly. Whether you’re researching, quoting, learning, or just want to save time, this tool makes it super easy.

👉 YouTube Transcript Generator – Instantly transcribe any YouTube video
Just paste the link, and we’ll generate a clean, formatted transcript you can read, copy, or download. No fluff. No sign-up. Just fast, accurate transcripts.

What it does:

You paste in a YouTube URL and get a full transcript — broken into readable chunks and free of timestamps or clutter.

Perfect for:

  • Students taking notes

  • Content creators quoting interviews or podcasts

  • Journalists and researchers

  • Anyone who wants to skim a video instead of watching 30+ minutes

Why we built it:

We kept running into this ourselves — watching entire videos just to find a 10-second quote, or copying messy autogenerated captions full of timestamps and weird formatting.

There wasn’t a dead-simple, fast way to get a clean transcript. So we built one.

How it works:

  1. Paste a YouTube URL

  2. Click "Generate Transcript"

  3. Copy, read, or download the cleaned-up text

That’s it — no login or credit card.

Try it here (free): https://youtube-transcript-generator.net/

We’re still in early days, and would love your thoughts:

  • Is this useful for you?

  • Anything you'd want to improve or add?

  • Any edge cases it doesn’t handle well?

We’re all ears — and happy to check out your projects too. 🚀

"I will give you a copy and paste of a youtube transcript. This includes timestamps, and the text is disjointed. Please remove the timestamps and rewrite the text into joined-up prose. Do not start writing yet. Do you understand?"

Then copy and paste the youtube transcription.

If you don't know how to see the transcript: Locate and click the three horizontal dots below the video. They should be next to the Share and Save buttons. Clicking the dots pulls up a short menu. Click Open transcript.

r/youtube on Reddit: How can I get a transcript of an YouTube video if there's no auto-generated one? I'm a viewer of video, not an author.
November 4, 2022 -

Hello. I'm absolutely new to Reddit, so forgive me if I sound sort of unnatural, also, English isn't my native language. I've tried to find answer to my question myself for a long time but to no avail, and it keeps bugging my mind for a week already, so I've come here in sincere hope for your help. I realize how weird my question can look and, probably, there won't be any effective answer but I have nothing to lose anyway.

So, I've faced the following situation. Some time ago, I was watching past broadcasts of one YT streamer. And I've come across a very funny moment which, back then, I've paid attention to but didn't bother at all about somehow remembering the particular stream/timestamp info when it took place. All I've clearly memorized is 1-2 sentences said by a streamer at that moment. A week ago, I, all out of sudden, recalled about that moment and wanted to re-watch it. But, since I didn't remember no date/title of that stream, nor at least approximate part (in the beginning/middle/end) when the moment took place, it has, essentially, got lost for me in a playlist with 40+ stream records each of which is 2-3h long. Finding by looking at images in a length scroll-bar doesn't seem possible because visual line is almost fully static and same all over the playlist. A streamer themselves, obviously, already forgot and they're not very popular to somehow ask other viewers.

First I've come up with is using built-in auto-generated subtitles feature to find the moment by text transcript because I clearly remember streamer's phrase. But the problem is that only like 5% records have them available of which only few were detected into English language (a streamer is bilingual and half of the time speaks different language). For some reason, most of the records are missing an auto-generated transcript, even though almost all of them are below 4 hours long (sometimes I've seen auto-generated transcript available even for 4+ hours streams, though, but here I found nothing).

Is there any solution for my weird problem? :) Apart of simply manually watching many hours to find those 5-10 seconds?.. Thank you very much.

r/youtubers on Reddit: Tools for Transcribing your video?
July 3, 2022 -

Do you use a tool to transcribe the audio of your video? I want to be able to play my video and have it transcribed in such a way that I can then use that text. So convert it to a .TXT like file.

I am toying with the idea of a blog as a cross-reference to my YouTube channel. I'd like to go back and Transcribe the audio of my older video videos into text that I can then use as the basis for various articles. Recognize that the same person will not necessarily read and watch so the fact that the two will share much of the same wording isn't a concern.

I've tried to use the dictation tool on Word but it won't "hear" the audio from the system or even speakers.

I have a test in less than a week and don't have time to go through lengthy YouTube lectures. Would be very helpful if I could obtain the transcript of those videos as it's quicker for me to read through it than watch more than 7 hours of lessons.

Any responses would be appreciated. Please help me out.
