I know nothing about your area but a few things to consider: Those fast food signs are meant to lure people in. That $19 maybe for a lead role or overnight employee. Fast food typically do not hire FT employees so even if that $19/hr is true you get 20hrs a week. Credit Unions in general typically are known for lower pay compared to banks due to resources and being not for profit. Truist andBank of America minimum pay is $22 with plans to get to $25 by 2025. Chase and US Bank at $20 however Wells Fargo is $15-22 based on region and PNC is $18. Credit Unions also typically have a stellar benefits package which make up the lack in pay. My health benefits are all paid for by my employer with $0 payroll deductions for medical, dental or vision. They match 6% for 401k AND do something similar to profit sharing every year if the credit union meets its goals. There is much more that make up the pay gap. Lastly, the Teller role is the most entry level position one can get at a FI. Tellers do the grunt of the work but bring in little of the dollars so they are not paid as well as they should be. A degree does not help with pay for this role. Lastly you should be counter-offering every post over a FI gives you. They will offer you the bare minimum bc majority accept it but there is room for more if you ask. For real last comment, branch turn over is high across the board and always has been. Fifth Third Bank as a company starts at a minimum pay of $20 hourly for all positions, including tellers. I used to work for them as a banker and made 23.75 before I moved on from the company. My wife just started at a local (but large) credit union. She has 4 years experience and an accounting degree. Her banking experience was twenty years ago in Asia. So she’s essentially a beginner.
Still, local fast food chains are touting $19.50/hour on door signs. This is a buck higher than the teller rate. Truly poverty wage, especially in San Diego county.
Are tellers generally this underpaid? She went through 80 hours of corporate training before starting her otj training period. Are the HR departments in this sector just severely lagging and out of step in compensation?
Btw, she’s only been there 3 months but they’ve had two new full time hires quit post-training but before day 1 in the last 3 weeks. Maybe they were poached by In and Out.
