Trump says he doesn't know when he'll hit Canada with tariff increase | CBC News
October 27, 2025 - As Canadian officials scramble to find clarity on Donald Trump's social media post announcing a 10 per cent increase to what he called "the Tariff on Canada," the U.S. president himself appears to be thin on the details. Nearly two days after posting to social media the words "I am increasing the Tariff on Canada by 10% over and above what they are paying now," Trump has yet to say which of the various tariffs on Canadian exports to the U.S.

5 days ago - So is Canada’s near‑absence in the strategy a warning that it will be taken for granted by a superpower increasingly focused on burden-sharing, or could it be a blessing in disguise — a sign that Ottawa is no longer squarely in Trump’s firing line? ... “If I were a Canadian,” said Jennifer Kavanagh, a senior fellow and director of military analysis at Defense Priorities and an adjunct professor at Georgetown University’s Center for Security Studies, “I would feel pretty good about this National Security Strategy.”

3 weeks ago - If Europe needs to be concerned about US political interference, or worse, in its affairs, so, too, does Canada. If you think this verges on the paranoid, then check out this passage from the Trump doctrine: “We will oppose elite-driven, anti-democratic restrictions on core liberties in Europe [nearly us], the Anglosphere [that’s us] and the rest of the democratic world, especially among our allies [that’s a bull’s eye].”

Mark Wiseman's Wisest Opening Gambit: Call Trump's CUSMA Bluff - Policy Magazine
4 days ago - President Trump wants us to twist in the wind amid the combined leverage of punitive sectoral tariffs on steel, aluminum and softwood lumber and his pointed threats to walk away from CUSMA unless Ottawa capitulates to his terms. The time has come to signal—quietly but unequivocally—that Canada is, with all the due diligence required of such circumstances, preparing for Trump’s nuclear option: the end of CUSMA, the core of which is unfettered trade in manufactured goods of which autos is the largest subsector.

April 3, 2025 - The Team Canada variation just adds more of an effort to get various players on the Canadian side, especially provinces, working together in building those alliances. The strategy is in some question now because there’s a recentralization of power in Washington, but the new central decision-makers — i.e., Trump and his most loyal supporters — are openly hostile to Canada.

3 weeks ago - This runs counter to Prime Minister Mark Carney’s plans to diversify Canada’s trade and defence relationships away from the United States. The NSS delivers a vision of extraterritorial economic nationalism that sees the sovereignty of allies, including Canada, as something “lesser” to be dominated – particularly worrying in the context of Mr. Trump’s repeated musings about using economic coercion to make Canada the 51st state.
