r/unitedkingdom on Reddit: Trump announces lawsuit against BBC
2 weeks ago - I’m sure some third party recordings made it over there with how the internet works, but as the BBC never broadcast it there, there’s no legal action that can be taken against them in the US. He could try to take legal action in the UK, but that ship has sailed. The original broadcast happened so long ago now that he can’t do anything about it. A UK judge will throw it out immediately. ... Settling with Trump would be massively unpopular because it's effectively public money.

November 17, 2025 - Absolutely correct. It's so devastating for the BBC regardless of what happens. I hope trump doesn't extract any cash from the BBC as I don't want our taxes funding a settlement to bloody trump, but whether or not they succeed there's no good outcome for the BBC here.

Not advice for myself so maybe this isn't the right sub. I've just heard on the news that this could cost the BBC millions to travel to the USA to defend this. What would happen if they just refuse to have anything to do with it all? Would any outcome be enforcemeable?

November 14, 2025 - From what I've seen on this, it does appear that the BBC did something very bad here. It appears that they took two pretty innocent speeches and spliced them together to make it look like Trump was calling for violence in the streets.

September 22, 2025 - The key point of course being that something was NOT ‘wrong’. The election was not ‘stolen’, that was a lie told by Donald Trump. Absolutely mad how far he has dragged us into the mud, the fact that he lied about this and tried to will people to overturn the results of an election is now a kind of inconsequential fact that everybody skips over. Nobody else in that country could get away with that ... If a quote means the same thing as the speech is taken from, it's not taken out of context. ... In the leaked BBC memo, obtained by The Telegraph, former Editorial Guidelines and Standards Committee (EGSC) adviser Michael Prescott claimed the editing of Mr Trump’s speech “created the impression that Trump said something he did not and, in doing so, materially misled viewers”.

November 10, 2025 - Notice how the BBC makes changes due to scandals yet right wing media doubles down. ... Considering they’ve been doing this stuff for decades it’s less “making changes” and more “doing the bare minimum to make it look like they’re doing something.” ... This is what I've been saying for a long time: Trump is uniquely bad and corrupt, in my opinion, but he also doesn't get fair reporting from the media.

November 4, 2025 - What the BBC finds impossible to manage is that not everything is a fact. Some things are normative, like moral issues, and while they seem like facts to everyone personally, the only thing a public broadcaster could do is reflect either diverse or broad opinion. Anyway, heads never roll. ... This is besides the point but... Mistakes like this Trump speech happen when everyone involved believed it was a ‘fact’ that Trump tried to stage a coup, so it seemed reasonable to edit a video to tell that story.

Honestly, in my opinion this is good. I don’t care what side of the political spectrum you sit on, there is no place for misinformation. I don’t like Donald Trump at all, but Panorama has an enormous amount of sway and their documentaries are often seen by an enormous amount of the UK electorate as highly trustworthy due to their more guerrilla form of reporting.

I’m glad that the BBC caught a lot of flack for this. We should be holding major news outlets to very high standards at all times

September 24, 2025 - I won’t defend the choice to edit the video that way, it was dumb… but Trump was literally impeached by his own government for doing exactly what the BBC edit implied he did. The video misrepresented his speech but did not misrepresent the substance.
