HTB has two parts, app and academy. App is basically just traditional CTF and you may be lost just hopping into this. Academy is a good starting point, but tbh it still operates under an assumption thst you arent starting from zero. I would say do tryhackme first for the basics, do the intro path and the junior path of what you are interested in, then move to academy. Answer from Incid3nt on reddit.com

r/cybersecurity on Reddit: Could you help me explain the difference between TryHackMe and Hack The Box?
December 31, 2024 -
I'm looking to study penetration testing to advance my skills, and I found these two recommended websites. Could you please explain the pros and cons of each?.
I have some basic knowledge because I work in IT support and Linux system administration, but I'm not very proficient. Therefore, I would like to know what additional things I need to study.

THM is more of a guided approach, with step-by-step instructions HTB is geared more towards intermediate and above, where you're presented subsequently more-difficult problems and need use creativity, research and previous knowledge to figure out how to solve them. Both have an initial set of challenges you can try out for free before paying. Why not give both a try?
TryHackMe vs HTB
I use both. Imo tryhackme has more and better content for blue team (although htb added nice activities). Also, htb is a little bit more technical or complex than thm. More on reddit.com
Try hack me vs Hack the box which one is more beginner friendly?
TryHackMe is a much better place to start than HackTheBox. THM holds your hand through most rooms and will give you enough information without overloading you. HTB is more for practicing than guided learning. HTB Academy has guided learning which is very good, but it’s quite text heavy and goes into quite a bit of detail. It can become dry, and the challenges associated with the modules are less engaging. I would recommend starting with THM. When you have the fundamentals down, you can start experimenting with boxes on HTB. When you are familiar with a subject, you can dive into HTB academy to get a deeper understanding of it. Should I start with HacktheBox or TryHackMe?
Tryhackme is easier to start with imo. That said nothing should stop you from trying some of HTB's easiest boxes and checkout some walkthroughs if you're stuck. But imo THM is more tutorial-oriented at least for many of its rooms and HTB is more challenges-oriented. Both feature a good deal of the other though More on reddit.com
Should I start learning on Try Hack Me or on Hack The Box academy?
TryHackMe is great for absolutely not knowing a subject and introduction. Hackthebox is good for their courses and stand along boxes to practice. Since it’s cheap af - you might wanna sprint through THM and their paths - then hit HTB. More on reddit.com

I use both, I think THM is better at explaining things but HTB has better challenges. Edit: to be clear if we are comparing apples to apples then we would need to compare THM to HTB Academy. If we go that route then THM is superior in its delivery of materials.
