Density really does matter in a mattress topper. I have many, many different toppers of different densities and my favorite, by far, is the 4lb topper from Foam Factory. They can send you sample cubes ofwhatever you like and at least you can feel the difference in “squishiness” between them. The 4lb has some heft to it and feels much more supportive than the 2.5lb and something like Serene foam. I also had a Viscosoft topper, and that, at 3.5lb density was way, way too firm for me, but I weigh 132 and am a side sleeper. I have decided to purchase a memory foam mattress topper to help support me when I sleep (I'm about 230-240 lbs and a side or back sleeper with some back problems).
Although my mattress was comfortable when I first bought it I just need something to help distribute my weight evenly so I don't wake up with sore hips.
I've read conflicting things about topper depth. Some people say that 3 inches isn't going to be supportive for long enough for someone heavier. And other people have said that 4 inches "folds like a taco" when you sleep on it and you can't move.
Anyone have any experience or insight to add. I don't mind having to flip/rotate it every so often and replace it in a couple of years. I'd prefer that to being unable to sleep comfortably right off the bat. But I want to make sure it will support my back and hips.
