Dorm mattresses are brutal, so adding a topper is a must. I tried the Sleep Mantra topper during my time, and while it’s plush, breathable, and fits Twin XL perfectly, it’s more on the soft side. It adds a nice cushioned layer but may not be firm enough if your son prefers medium firm. For solid support, I’d recommend looking into a medium firm memory foam or a thinner latex topper. those offer better structure for someone who doesn’t like super soft options. While it's possible to use a twin topper on a twin XL mattress, it's not recommended. A standard twin mattress is only 75 inches long, but a twin XL is 80 inches long. When placed on a twin XL mattress, a twin mattress topper is going to come up 5 inches short. This may not be an issue if you're on the shorter side, or if the pad will be used in a child's bed, but for most adults, the twin topper will be too short.
