Can you use type M copper pipe? — Heating Help: The Wall
October 15, 2023 - L has a thicker wall than M. NJ allows M copper for domestic? According to their 2021 NSPC https://epubs.iapmo.org/NSPC/NJ2021/ yes, and looks to have always been allowed in NJ even in prior code adoptions. But will say, I have plenty of NJ plumbers and they still only buy type L pipe.

We have to redo our current water-pipe runs to our Faucets at various Machining Positions. The garbage plastic stuff used has been popping leaks. By its description "Type L" Copper is that balanced choice that is thicker and more durable for interior, non-high-pressure runs. "Type M" is the... More on practicalmachinist.com

Type M copper for whole house repipe?
M is thinner than L and will not last as long. The M copper in my home lasted for 17 years before it started developing pinhole leaks. I had the affected pipes replaced with L. More on reddit.com

Copper re-pipe type L/M
In places with bad water quality L is much better and will buy you an extra 10-20 years of life. If you have decent water quality type m can still last 30-50 years easily, but only if properly installed. Number one failure is caused by not reaming the pipe, this causes cavitation in the water which will cause pinholes eventually. This will happen to L also if not reamed but will take much longer. From there it is a preference issue. More on reddit.com

is type M copper pipe okay to mix with type L, and is it okay to use to run an exterior spigot?
Copper pipe 'types' determine wall thickness, Type K is thickest and they get thinner as you go to L and M. Outside diameter remains the same for all types so you can use the same joining methods for everything. All types will easily handle standard residential pressures, and if water hammer is an issue, best to install a hammer arrester. Unless budget is an issue and assuming code allows it, I would personally use type K for buried underground application, type L for piping exposed to potential abuse and type M for applications where it is concealed and protected. If you are not on municipal water and there is a possibility of having acidic water, then thick wall pipe will last longer before the acid forces you to replace it. More on reddit.com

Differences Between Type L and Type M Copper Pipes
September 10, 2025 - But for normal in-wall household plumbing, Type M works fine. When it comes to copper piping for water lines, acidic water with a pH of seven or less can be hard on copper pipes. If you have a well and find out from testing that the water is acidic, you may want to use the thicker-wall Type L pipe or plastic CPVC pipe and fittings.

October 9, 2025 - You will not see water leak through Type M pipe. It is thinner but usually considered sufficient for normal household use when the water is not highly acidic. You usually do not bend copper water pipe like you do with electrical conduit so that should not be relevant.

Type M pipe bad, type L necessary?
May 15, 2007 - The plumber strongly recommends ... type M copper piping, vintage 1989, with type L. He says the type L lasts 50 years, and that our type M could go at any point.
