August 27, 2021 - Serial data interfaces include CAN, RS-232, RS-485, RS-422, I2C, I2S, LIN, SPI, and SMBus, but RS-232, RS-485 and RS-422 are still the most reliable and common ones. RS-232 is a standard communication protocol used by serial ports for linking ...

May 1, 2026 - /dev/ttyHS*; other types have yet other prefixes. Some virtual serial ports not intended for general communication have names that intentionally do not match this pattern. The DOS and Windows environments refer to serial ports as COM ports and are named ... COM2, ..etc. This list includes some of the more common devices that are connected to the serial port on a PC.
Nowadays what are the uses of serial ports?
They work. They're the 'simplest' form of communication that almost every chip supports. I would bet even your phone has UART pads broken out. More on reddit.com
Does anybody know what type of cable adapter I need for the 10101 port?
It's a serial port. There's still a handful of devices out there that use it (model railroad interfaces, older car diagnosis machines, older computer-controlled lathes and such) but if you don't already have a device that needs it then just ignore it. It's NOT a video port, if that's what you're thinking. VGA ports are female and have 15 pins. More on reddit.com
Confused about how UART relates to serial ports
It creates a virtual UART over the USB connection, so technically you are still using UART for communications, it just uses USB instead of real wires as the method to transfer the signals. More on reddit.com
Eli5: In networking, what is the purpose of a serial interface? Why not just use an extra regular interface?
As you said the whole point of the serial interface is fore OOB management. More specifically as a last ditch way to get into the switch when it looses its configuration or has a fault that takes the other ports (including the dedicated Ethernet management port) down. Serial is better for this because it requires little to no configuration and is a simple and well established interface. It doesn’t require an IP and support for TCP and SSH or similar. Just some connection parameters (that are usually standard) and you get a command prompt. More on reddit.com
What types of devices use a serial port for communication?
Serial ports are commonly used for communication with devices such as modems, printers, barcode scanners, and medical equipment. They are also used in industrial automation and control systems, as well as in networking equipment such as routers and switches.

What is a serial port and how does it differ from a parallel port?
A serial port is a physical communication interface that enables the transfer of data between devices, such as a computer and a modem or a printer. It transmits data serially, which means that the bits of data are sent one after the other over a single wire. In contrast, a parallel port sends multiple bits of data simultaneously over several wires.

How do I connect a device to a serial port?
To connect a device to a serial port, you will need a serial cable that matches the connector on the device. The most common type of serial cable is a 9-pin male-to-male cable. The cable is then connected to the serial port on the computer or device. If the device requires specific serial port settings, such as baud rate or parity, these settings will need to be configured as well.

Serial Port Overview - MATLAB & Simulink
Serial ports consist of two signal types: data signals and control signals. To support these signal types, as well as the signal ground, the RS-232 standard defines a 25-pin connection. However, most PCs and UNIX® platforms use a 9-pin connection.

September 17, 2020 - RS-422 is generally used to connect to a single device also, but the type of information sent back and forth is simpler than that of the RS-232 protocol. Examples are an on/off switch for lights and a temperature sensor. RS-485 allows connection of up to 32 devices in a daisy chain fashion. So if you need to connect a bunch of things to 1 port, you should use an RS-485. ... RS-485 is used for multiple devices. On many Teguar computers, one serial port supports all three protocols, and the rest of the serial ports support only 232.

They plug in to your computer using a female plug (unless your computer is odd and has a female port, in which case your cable will need a male plug). This Wikipedia page has more information on the plug used. Both have the same basic types of pins. A DB-25 has most of the pins as ground pins or simply unconnected, whereas a DE-9 has only one ground pin. There is a transmitting pin (for sending information away) and a receiving pin (for getting information). Most serial ports run in a duplex mode--that is, they can send and receive simultaneously.

October 30, 2025 - Cable length depends on baud rate and signal type: RS232 (single-ended): ~50 feet at 9600 bps; <10 feet at 115200 bps. RS485 (differential): Up to 4000 feet at low baud rates, thanks to noise immunity. Extension with Serial Servers: EBYTE Serial Servers eliminate distance limits by converting serial signals to Ethernet, allowing remote access to serial devices over existing IP networks (e.g., monitoring a factory sensor from a cloud dashboard). A single serial port typically supports one device at a time.
