I am buying a laptop and I'll be using it for designing engineering models, running simulations and mathematical models. I know that H processor like i7-8550H is the best option but they are out of my range. Will the U processors work fine for me? I have no idea, what I mean is will the U processor be able to handle the pressure? Will it run properly? Will it overheat to easily?

Can't decide between Intel H processors and G processors

What is your use case ? You need to only go for h series only if your gaming or doing any high end graphical task. Yes battery will be lower considering h series take upto 45-55 watts The g series u series come without proper dedicated graphic cards and hence they are intended at people who are not into gaming or maybe wants light gaming and less graphical intense task they take only 15watts or so hence more battery efficient. Since h series come with deticated graphics card most of the time you have to keep it plugged in to get the maximum fps since the battery cant power both at the same time. Explaining your use case would help us decide what kind you need , performance is not linear here... Benchmarks is what we can use since clocks and turbo boost alone can't say much about a cpu performance there are several factors. More on reddit.com

Battery life: U vs H processors

there are technical reasons why H based laptops has more powerful performance and more power hungry than U laptops. More cores, higher frequency that comes with higher leakage power, external graphics cards. 2 fans etc. So you will definitely get lower battery life on H for the exact same work done on U laptop. But this is a conscious design choice as many people will use H laptops more like a portable desktop and less likely to work on battery power as it lowers performance. U laptop on the other hand is focused on mobility and long battery life - so it operates more efficiently but with lower overall performance. So depending on the use case people have to choose U and H irrespective of the price. There are crossovers where U laptops are costlier than H laptops as well. More on reddit.com

U vs H processors (8th gen i5)

The main difference between the two SKUs is that the H has a higher TDP so even though the boost clocks are similar the higher power chip should be able to sustain the boost for a longer period of time provided it is adequately cooled. The H series also has support for faster memory. Lookup benchmarks for exact figures but probably I would (and I did back when I was in uni) go for the u series as most uni work is not that intensive and the u series has better battery life.
