If you want structured paths with a real capstone, Coursera’s big name tracks are better, especially for data stuff, but they can be slow and a bit academic. Udemy is hit or miss, look for high rated instructors and recent updates, it’s great for quick skill gaps and project based tutorials. Do a small project per course and put it on GitHub, then apply while you’re learning, waiting to feel “ready” takes forever. Also, the market is rough and there’s a lot of ghost listings on the big boards, if you’re open to remote roles, wfhalert is a simple service that emails vetted postings like support or junior web dev so you can focus on applying without wading through junk. February 20, 2024Coursera is buying out Udemy through a $2.5billion merger. I am pretty sure we should be worried about what the future holds.
I am deeply invested into udemy after 9 years teaching on the platform and almost 500,000 students and I am VERY worried. Revenue was already coming down fast in the last six months with the last 3 being very steep revenue falls. I figured something like this might happen as Udemy was not doing well on their own. I am not sure what this means and even the CEO is admitting they have not figured out the details of the merger yet in terms of brand retention and platform functionality. That will all be figured out by the new board which will be 3 udemy people and 6 coursera (they will dominate). Udemy is now second fiddle to coursera. Not sure what that will mean for us instructors and we can only wait and see what happens. I am glad I am moving to YouTube, but youtube does not pay the bills quite like Udemy did. Zero credibility for both. BUT Udemy courses are one of the best to take when I am preparing exams for industry recognised certifications. Coursera courses on the other hand are pretty much useless in content when i prep for industry certifications exams.

I’m looking to learn new tech skills and possibly brush on the current skills that I have. I was hoping that I can have better skills first before applying for positions so employers won’t see me as totally useless. I have already graduated just last year by the way.
So now, I’m thinking to self-learn, but idk which one is better, Coursera or Udemy? I opt for a self-pace online courses, as I have other personal commitments too. But I also intend on working on some sort of capstone project at the end of the online course, and then receive some sort of professional certification upon completion.
Any tips or recommendations? I saw that Udemy courses are kinda pricy but some times offer discounts. Coursera is doing this subscription model, so idk what’s best. Any advice is highly recommended.
P.S. I was mostly into data science, data analyst, machine learning, and research-oriented roles. But due to how bad the job market is, I have decided to be more open with other roles such as web developer, software developer, and any other tech/IT-related role (I have a few but not so rigorous skills I have picked up in the past) just to get my foot in the door.
Tldr: I want to do a self-pace online course to learn new tech skills, hone my current skills, do a culminating project, and earn some certification. And idk which platform to go to, Course or Udemy.

Certificates from Udemy carry no weight. Neither do those from Coursera for the most part. Udemy has a larger pool to choose from and content tends to be surface level (ie. Learning how to use tool) Coursera has a smaller pool but it’s primarily content from universities and brand named companies (ie. Google, IBM, AWS, meta). So content is more likely to be on the academic level (ie. Learning when and why use a tool). Google/ibm/meta courses are still very surface level. Make what you will of that.

The merger is going to change things drastically for everyone invested on the Udemy platform. Especially those who have bought a lot of courses on Udemy because nothing has been said yet on the matter.
Coursera is very costly compared to Udemy. Earlier there was the audit feature (which allowed the student to watch for free, without tests and certificate), which is now removed. Udemy frequently has sales on the platform where you can get courses for dirt cheap prices, and own them permanently.
Coursera player is outdated too. There are no shortcuts to increase/decrease speed, and the controls are cumbersome, for a player in the 21st century. The overall website UI looks archaic too. Udemy player on the other hand (keeping the redesigned UI aside) is more feature rich. There are multiple shortcuts.
I wonder what will happen to the courses purchased on Udemy once the merger goes through. And what happens to the website and the player.
There is also this stupid plan to use AI to train on the course material. This will push away creators from the platform.

Oh this is bad. I own a number of courses on Udemy, but I also use the public library access portal through Gale, which gives me access to almost every course for free. Udemy being bought out will likely lead to higher course prices, less sales, and shutting down course pipelines like Gale.
