Just depends on your weight. We had the cheaper chipboard stepped one with no modifications, and I sat on it all the time with my partner (55kg, 65kg). It was fine, and those ones are much weaker than these. Wood ones are definitely the way to go. If you're assembling new from scratch, you could place extra L-shaped brackets between the sides and the lid for strength. You could place big ones at either end, or small ones between each dividing sections. If you'll place it against a wall, you can put cross braces on the back side, too - triangles are always stronger, so a small wood length across each corner to make a triangle will make it strong. Any unfinished pine will be a reasonable colour match. If you want, you can paint, stain or wax at the end to hide any colour difference. Lastly, consider getting the wooden shelves rather than the box trays - they'll reinforce the structure as a whole, where the trays don't. Personally, though, I wouldn't bother doing any of that for smaller adults or kids. If you're heavier, it's an option (but they're not that big, so I may not be comfortable anyway). Trofast generally are pretty sturdy. The wood ones are quite easy to disassemble (just don't glue anything, and use good screwdrivers bits so you don't mess up your screws). I'd be inclined to just put them together and see, and if it doesn't seem study enough, pop the top off and add the brackets, and some cross braces to the back. I have the 1x4 kallax as a toy box in my kid's bedroom. We built a cushion to go on top with a thick piece of particle board, glued foam to it, and stapled fabric on top. My husband (6'7" tall and 250lbs) sits on it regularly and it's fine.

I'll explain a solution to you, but just to give you a warning that I use Socialist Utopia measurements (metric) instead of We Miss Being A British Colony measurements (imperial): What you want to use is SEKTION, the kitchen cabinet system. To create bench seating people will often use the 40cm high wall cabinets, but they're only 37cm deep. Or they use the SEKTION top cabinets (which are normally placed as storage above fridges) which are 60cm deep. Because it's SEKTION you'll be able to use whatever style of front suits you. Up to you if they're doors or drawers, either will work. And it will support the weight. SEKTION uses the suspension rail system, so that will distribute evenly across the wall behind it. But it would be worth putting blocks of wood beneath it to support the weight. Then also a simple bit of worktop over the top. Google search "SEKTION as bench seating" or "METOD as bench seating" for ideas. METOD is what SEKTION is known as everywhere else in the world. More on reddit.com
