Just been told my thyroid is borderline underactive, I'm terrified
I have sub clinical hypothyroidism. Honestly I’d say having an under active thyroid is less than asthma. For an under active thyroid all they do is give you more of the hormones your thyroid is supposed to make. Some people don’t even have thyroids and live normal lives with medication (my aunt is one!). Honestly having an under active thyroid sucks and makes you feel like crap all the time, once your treated it’s usually not a big deal. More on reddit.com

Hypothyroidism in Children | Children's Hospital of Philadelphia
Congenital hypothyroidism (CH) occurs when the thyroid gland does not develop or function normally prior to birth. It is a very common problem, affecting about 1 in every 2,500 to 3,000 babies. In the United States, all states test for CH as part of their routine newborn screening process. Many factors, including your family history, your child’s physical exam, the degree of hypothyroidism in your baby at the time of diagnosis, and the course of treatment over the first two to three years of life, will help your child's physician determine if the cause is hereditary (runs in your family), and if life-long therapy is required.

May 15, 2021 - Few older patients with confirmed hypothyroidism have overt symptoms to suggest disease.28 Serum TSH levels can increase with age, and mild elevations do not necessarily reflect subclinical hypothyroidism.29 A randomized placebo-controlled trial of 737 patients older than 65 years with subclinical hypothyroidism demonstrated no significant improvement in quality of life with levothyroxine treatment.7 A separate study found no association between subclinical hypothyroidism and ischemic heart disease, heart failure, or cardiovascular death.30 Thyroid hormone has known inotropic effects on cardiac tissue and can increase myocardial oxygen demand.

Large amounts of dietary fiber can also interfere with levothyroxine treatment. People who eat high-fiber diets may need higher doses of the drug. Not taking the medication as instructed (on an empty stomach at least 2 hours after or 1 hour before eating) is the most common cause of poor absorption of the medication. Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland does not make enough thyroid hormones. Hypothyroidism is often called underactive or low thyroid.

For borderline underactive thyroid, drug therapy isn’t always necessary - Harvard Health
August 20, 2019 - If the thyroid is underactive, the pituitary gland will tell the thyroid to work harder, and it does that by sending out more TSH. So the higher the TSH level, the lower the thyroid activity. A normal TSH value is under 4.0 milli-international units per liter (mIU/L). When the TSH level is above 10 mIU/L, there’s uniform agreement that treatment with levothyroxine is appropriate.
