I'm not in Ontario, but here is my experience with Uni Express in Montreal. I've had four packages delivered by them in the past month and a half. They are a very small courier service that seems to exist solely to deliver combined shipping packages from AliExpress. Any AE packages that have shipped individually always come in via Canada Post. The best way to keep track of Uni deliveries is through their 'Uni App'. Here is what their delivery jargon has meant for me (the order is bottom-up [most recent event on top], same as it appears in the UNI app): Tracking event #5*: Out for Delivery *Will appear 1-2 days after the previous event. Tracking event #4*: Arrival Scan [address of Uni Express depot in your hometown] *Will appear 1-2 days after the previous event. Tracking event #3*: Gateway transit to destination Toronto Warehouse, Toronto Ontario *Will appear 3-5 days after the previous event. Tracking event #2*: Canada, Your parcel has arrived in Canada and in the process of customs or transshipment *Will appear 1 day after the previous event. Tracking event #1*: China, Your parcel is in transit to Canada by air *This is the first tracking event you will see. Takeaways: From the time of the first tracking event to the last, total time will be 7-11 days. Use the Uni App, as their tracking numbers don't show up on other parcel apps I have installed. If you are home on the day of tracking event #5, be ready to pounce on the driver like a leopard and if you see a missed call from an unknown number, this means your package is literally minutes away from delivery. Call the number right back and let the driver know you are home and waiting for your package. Detailed breakdown of my experiences with them for each parcel: Parcel #1: Like you, I had never heard of these guys before this, so when unknown phone numbers started calling me, I never picked up. Turns out the delivery driver for Uni Express was calling me to deliver the package and when I didn't answer, the package was sent back to their storage depot. I was left a missed delivery card with no info on how to contact them. I installed their app and the next day, the Uni App mentioned that I had 5 days to pick up my package or it would be returned to China. I could also schedule a second delivery attempt, but it would be a wait of two weeks. I chose to pick it up and saw that it's a small operation with a storage area where they were handling maybe a few hundred small packages. Takeaway: since I didn't know who they were at this point, I give them a pass on this delivery even though a 5 day deadline to pick something up is ridiculous. Usually couriers will hold on to packages for anywhere from 2-4 weeks. Parcel #2: This time the Uni App showed that my item was out for delivery and I was ready for their calls. The driver called my cell phone and let it ring only once before hanging up. The driver then buzzed my apartment and I immediately ran to my building lobby to find him writing out another missed delivery card. He sheepishly claimed that my buzzer wasn't working which was BS. Slightly annoyed, I took it from him. Parcel #3: This time the driver once again buzzed my apartment and left the parcel in my building lobby. This was acceptable to me. Parcel #4: This time there was no call or buzz at all. The front door to the building was open and the driver left the parcel in the lobby. I only found out it had been delivered through their app. Answer from tdredi on reddit.com

I just stumbled on your post even though it's a few weeks old I thought I'd share my experience (and little frustration). I've had two parcels (apparently) delivered by Uni Express (aka Uni Uni) in recent times and both of them have gone missing while AE logistics claim they have been delivered. In reply to my dispute case, AE requested I provide a statement from my local post service asserting that they, themselves, lost the parcel in transit! Just to be accommodating, I contacted Canada Post and (oh surprise!) they have no record of my parcel. And that's when I find out that the first letter in the tracking number (U#######) refers to Uni Express which is a private delivery service that I'm guessing to be more economical than that of the public sector. I'm suspecting a certain affiliation with the original shipper given that they share a common surname... but that has yet to be verified. When I contacted UE with the same request set forth by AE, they answered with a dark and blurry photo of a hand holding a parcel with the front door of my house as background. An accompanying message saying: "proof of delivery". I replied with an observation that their photo also shows my front door being only three steps away from a public sidewalk. They cut all communications after that. UE operations apparently don't include pickup points and your parcels are systematically left at your doorstep with no effort to conceal them or even a notice to tell you they have arrived. And so without proof that the packages were lost by my local delivery service, AE closed my dispute cases. What makes it more frustrating is the fact that both times, the parcel contained multiple orders that AE thought more convenient to combine into one shipment. Yet each order was closed with its respective shipping fee and each parcel - if delivered separately - would have easily fit through my mail slot. Furthermore, if sent through regular post, any package that doesn't fit in the mail slot would simply get me a notice to pick up my belongings at the local post office.

r/backblaze on Reddit: Datacenter Locations
December 24, 2023 -

I've been de-AWSing my personal infrastructure, and as part of that move out I'm also a recent convert to B2 from S3 (although I've used personal backup back in the early teens, I remember that era when Mac users and Backblaze loved each other).

My biggest gripe so far is I need to create separate accounts for the three separate regions, which led me down the rabbit hole of learning more about the regions and the zones/clusters that back them.

There's no clear place where Backblaze lists datacenter locations. I'm able to piece together the newer clusters using announcements and pdb, but the early ones are hard to figure out, even with Brian Wilson's incredible timeline: https://www.ski-epic.com/backblazetimeline/

Can someone help me put the rest together?

  • 2008: ca000 (us-west-000) is maybe Quest Sacramento, Roseville CA?

  • 2013: ca001 (us-west-001) is maybe Sungard Sacramento, Rancho Cordova CA?

  • 2017: ca002 (us-west-002) is CyrusOne Phoenix, Chandler AZ

  • 2019: ca003 (eu-central-003) is DR/Interxion Amsterdam, Netherlands (maybe AMS7?)

  • 2022: ca004 (us-west-004) is the Nautilus proof of concept river barge water cooled datacenter, Stockton CA (wavelength to Equinix SJO?)

  • 2022: ca005 (us-east-005) is CoreSite VA2 One Wilshire, Reston VA

At the beginning of time, Backblaze was originally in 365 Main (DR SFO12) but then quickly moved to Oakland (DR OAK10?)? Clusters no longer exist at these locations, it was all moved to ca000?

It doesn't matter for us-east and eu-central, but when creating a bucket in us-west, is there a way to steer cluster selection?

Just noticed that u/brianwski is still active even after retirement! Thanks for creating that timeline page, it was amazing to see Backblaze's classic silicon valley tech startup story with pictures and stats.

Can someone help me put the rest together? Here! I can help and give you any information you want in any level of detail you want. Total transparency since I no longer work there and don't care what Backblaze's thinks, LOL. Anything you want to know? I'm here to answer. Ask me anything. Jumping to the END of your comment: is there a way to steer cluster selection? Oh heck yes, it is COMPLETELY controllable, and I can give you the backdoor incantation that puts your account on one particular cluster if you care. I'm shying away from putting it in this first post just because it isn't important and whatever you think you are choosing is incorrect. Why do you care? I mean other than "region" which is INCREDIBLY important and easily controllable. But cluster within region isn't important. For the data centers -> It starts a little earlier than your timeline (but I see your notes at the end mention it). First of all, the very first, single datacenter Backblaze was in was called "365 Main San Francisco" because that was the address. It was very close to the the Backblaze business partner (Tim Nufire's) home who would spend the most time there, so it made a lot of sense for an early startup. Next, Tim Nufire and I moved every last piece of Backblaze server equipment from "365 Main San Francisco" to their datacenter in Oakland to make sure it was carefully placed on top of the biggest faultline for earthquakes in California (that's a joke). Same datacenter ownership company, just a different address which was 720 2nd St, Oakland, California. Tim and I drove that equipment across the Bay Bridge from San Francisco to Oakland in my 2002 Nissan Sentra and Tim's BMW one night, and racked it in the new datacenter and recofigured it all and brought it all up and online (flawlessly I might add), LOL. Good times, very stressful, glad it went off without a hitch. That became Backblaze's only datacenter address for a while, and was the address that went ENTIRELY OFFLINE in a human error event described here: https://www.backblaze.com/blog/dont-push-that-button/ The part of that event which (and I'm serious here) gives the current Backblaze CEO Gleb Budman serious street cred is because of this one photo I took that night: https://www.ski-epic.com/backblazetimeline/pd5s_2010_04_22_datacenter_gleb_crash_cart_pods.jpg Now I'm serious, that's the CEO of a (now publicly traded) tech company operating a crash cart in a datacenter at 3am in the morning under the pressure that we might be totally and completely be out of business. Anybody who doesn't give Gleb props for that can kiss my large white Silicon Valley ass, and I say that as somebody who was there that night with a crash cart booting servers. How many CEOs of tech companies have stayed up all night long in datacenters connecting crash carts to servers booting server after server? Ok, after that it gets more stable. Yes, we move to Roseville. If you need the actual address I can get that for you. Backblaze is still there. Yes it is Rancho Cordova, I can get you the actual address if you want it. Nautilus proof of concept river barge water cooled datacenter That one scares me, LOL. It's a great story and all, but a floating datacenter? What could go wrong is it could sink like a rock. It wasn't my choice to choose that datacenter but my net worth will be determined by the outcome. I hope they do well. I can get you the address of the Amsterdam datacenter, and the Virginia datacenter if you care.
