Set Operations | Union | Intersection | Complement | Difference | Mutually Exclusive | Partitions | De Morgan's Law | Distributive Law | Cartesian Product
We can write this union more compactly by $$\bigcup_{i=1}^{n} A_i.$$ For example, if $A_1=\{a,b,c\}, A_2=\{c,h\}, A_3=\{a,d\}$, then $\bigcup_{i} A_i=A_1 \cup A_2 \cup A_3=\{a,b,c,h,d\}$. We can similarly define the union of infinitely many sets $A_1 \cup A_2 \cup A_3 \cup\cdots$. The intersection of two sets $A$ and $B$, denoted by $A \cap B$, consists of all elements that are both in $A$ $\underline{\textrm{and}}$ $B$. For example, $\{1,2\}\cap\{2,3\}=\{2\}$. In Figure 1.5, the intersection of sets $A$ and $B$ is shown by the shaded area using a Venn diagram.

Why are math textbooks so convoluted and unnecessarily hard to understand
Well, I'll agree that some books are extremely terse, and sometimes I question if the author is just trying to stroke their own ego with how short they make their proofs, but also reading math is a skill, and a difficult one at that. Reading math is a completely different part of the brain than reading in general. Part of getting a math degree is building up that skill from basically zero to the point where you feel quite comfortable reading it. without any of the hard-to-understand math jargon Keep in mind that a textbook has to be precise, especially if you're reading topology, while a youtube video doesn't. A youtube video can handwave intuitive explanations, but a textbook needs to rigorously explain it to avoid saying something wrong. For example, read the definition of a bounded variation here . It's very technical, but intuitively, if a function isn't BV, then I like to think of it as either blowing up to infinity or wobbling super fast. That intuitive explanation isn't wrong per se, but you can't just put "wobbling super fast" in a textbook, especially when it's possible to make functions that wobble infinitely that are BV (e.g. x2sin(1/x)). How do i find the probability of union / intersection in 3 circle venn diagram
What I do for problems like this is to draw the diagram and label each area with a variable. A three circle Venn diagram should give 8 variables. You can then write an equation for each of the statements given and solve the equations to find the total number of students and the number of students in each of the groups you have been asked to find. Does that help any? More on reddit.com

How do you find the union and intersection of sets?
The formula to find the union of two sets is \(A\cup B\) = {\(x: x\in A\) or \(x\in B\)}, and the formula to find the intersection of two sets is \(A\cap B\) = {\(x: x\in A\) and \(x\in B\)}.

What is the difference between a union and an intersection of sets?
Union of any two sets results in a completely new set that contains elements that are present in the first set, the second set, or elements that are in both sets. Whereas, the intersection of sets will contain elements that are common in both sets.

The union of two sets \(A\) and \(B\) is defined as the set of elements that are included either in the set \(A\) or set \(B\), or both \(A\) and \(B\). July 27, 2020 - Case 2: \(x \notin A.\) Since \(x\in (A\cup B), \) \(x \in A \vee x \in B\) by definition of union, so \(x\) must be an element of \(B.\) Furthermore, since \(x\in (A\cup C),\) \(x \in A \vee x \in C\) by definition of union, so \(x\) must be an element of \(C.\) We have \(x \in B \wedge x \in C,\) thus \(x\in B\cap C\). by definition of intersection. And so, \(x\in A\cup(B\cap C)\). by definition of union. In both cases, if \(x \in (A \cup B) \cap (A \cup C),\) then \(x\in A\cup(B\cap C.)\) So, by definition of subset, \((A \cup B) \cap (A \cup C) \subseteq A \cup (B \cap C.)\) It follows that \(A \cup (B \cap C) = (A\cup B) \cap (A\cup C)\), by definition of equality of sets.

The union of sets can also be generalized to define the union of an infinite number of sets $$A_k$$. In this case, it is defined by: $$$\cup_k A_k=\{ x\in U \ | \ \exists k \ : \ x\in A_k$$$ Given two sets $$A$$ and $$B$$, we define their intersection as $$$A\cap B=\{ x\in U \ | \ x\in A \ and \ x\in B\}$$$
