What is the main difference between unit price and unit cost?
The main difference lies in the perspective. Unit price is the amount a customer pays for one unit of a product (e.g., price per kg). It is relevant for consumers making purchasing decisions. In contrast, unit cost is the total expense a company incurs to produce one unit of a product (including materials, labour, and overhead). It is a crucial metric for the manufacturer to determine profitability and pricing strategy.

How is the total price of an item different from its unit price?
The total price (or retail price) is the full amount you pay for the entire product at the checkout. The unit price breaks down that total cost to show you the price for a standard measurement of the product. For instance, a 2-litre bottle of juice might have a total price of โน120. Its unit price, however, would be โน60 per litre, which is useful for comparing it against a 1-litre bottle.

Can you explain how to find the unit price with a real-world example?
Certainly. Imagine you are at a store comparing two packs of pencils.Pack A has 10 pencils and costs โน50.Pack B has 12 pencils and costs โน54.To find the better deal, you calculate the unit price for each:Unit Price of Pack A: โน50 / 10 pencils = โน5 per pencil.Unit Price of Pack B: โน54 / 12 pencils = โน4.50 per pencil.Even though Pack B has a higher total price, its unit price is lower, making it the better value for money.

r/Frugal on Reddit: Can someone explain unit pricing to me?
February 21, 2016 -
As in grocery stores. I've always paid attention to just price, not price per unit. is this something I should look at? Please let me know how you consider this in making buying decisions.

I do consider price per unit! If I want to buy a pound of chicken that costs $1.00 per ounce, I could do that. (I'm totally making up prices here.) But what if buying two pounds of chicken cost me only $0.75 per ounce? Sometimes buying a larger quantity costs less per ounce/unit.

Price per unit, let's think about boxes of dry pasta. One box is $4.99 for 16oz. That is $0.31 per oz The second box is $5.29 for 20oz. That is $0.26 per oz If I think I am going to use the extra 4oz in the larger box before it goes bad, then I would buy the larger box even though it is more expensive. Some times buying the larger size doesn't make sense, if I won't use the larger amount before it goes bad, or it is something I only need x amount and will have a small amount left just sitting in the fridge taking up space.
