What is the correct way of defining a float or int number? - Questions & Answers - Unity Discussions
Hello, This may seem to be a basic question but i don’t have the right answer for it so i decided to ask it here and get some answers from you guys. I am writing my scripts in java language. Sometimes i see these type of writing on the internet; 3.0f or 3f. More on discussions.unity.com

Float vs Vector1 vs double vs System.Decimal ? Where should these be used, and what are the differences?
There's a couple of distinctions that need to be made here: floatvs double: These are both primitive c# integral types, but float (also sometimes called a single) is a 32 bit floating point value (hence the name), while double is a 64 bit floating point value (double the size of a float). Most of the Unity api expects float or int values, so you should really only reach for doubles if you're running into precision problems (unlikely for most common use cases). System.Decimal is a 128 bit floating point value. I struggle to think of a situation where this is necessary in game development. Vector1 vs float1 are common terms for a floator single in shader programming languages. Some languages prefer or require one over the other. Generally, I think the difference is semantics. Are you dealing with a "number" or are you dealing with a "one dimensional dataset"? More on reddit.com

A question about float and f? - Scripting - Unity Discussions
Doesn’t float just mean the number will have a decimal? What does f mean? Is it just a clarification for Unity telling it, “Hey, this unit will be a float!”? Or am I completely wrong? And should probably uninstall Unity and donate my computer to the nearest Salvation Army and never buy ... More on discussions.unity.com

How do I declare a new float inside a script? : r/unity
April 8, 2024 - You declare a new float by writing float followed by the variable name you want and then assign it a value or just leave it as “float x;” but that’ll assign it a base value of 0 since floats cannot be null.

Unity vs floating point - Aras Pranckevičius
June 11, 2026 - For most math functions (Sqrt, Sin, Cos, Log, Pow…), prefer System.MathF over UnityEngine.Mathf. Unity’s Mathf casts to double, calls the double version, then converts back to float. System.MathF calls the float-native implementations directly.

r/Unity3D on Reddit: why does unity do this? is it stupid?
December 21, 2023 - This is 100% Unity's fault. Yes, it is true that floating-point numbers are imprecise. That doesn't mean you need to represent them a different way every time you store them. It's completely possible, even not difficult, to store a string version of a float such that you get the exact same binary value back when you read it.

Best practice of the use of floats and practical double examples - Scripting - Unity Discussions
March 31, 2024 - Hi, I’ve been working with Unity for a few months now and habitually put the f suffix after every number. I’m wondering if this is standard / best practice or if I’m missing something since I’m still relatively new. Additionally, I understand that truncation can be an issue when not using a double and needing highly precise numbers, but I’m attempting to catalog in my mind a few practical examples of when to use a double so that I can avoid running into precision issues in the future.
