How would you rank the attractions featured in Universal Hollywood?
I will undoubtedly make people mad with this list, but I like having conversations. All this is my own personal opinion. I also assume that excluding shows and play areas also means excluding interactivity in Hogsmeade and Super Nintendo World, so those go unranked, too. Least favorite to personal best: 12. The Simpsons Ride. Probably the hottest take comes out first. The simulator on this one is, at the time of writing, the only one to ever get me close to throwing up because it was really rough, and that's across all theme parks I've been to. The aging animation doesn't help much either, and I also don't have a ton of attachment to the Simpsons as an IP, so maybe the references of the show are not hitting me, either? Maybe sacrilege to say, but I hope Universal finds something else to show here after the license expires, and they opt not to renew with Disney. I have my own idea for what I could put here, but that's not what this post is for. 11. Silly Swirly. I'm not in the target demographic, but at least it doesn't make me feel sick. I rode this once with a young cousin who is very scared of traditional coasters to comfort him, but I have no intention of going on my own. 10. Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem. Again, not in the target demographic, but good enough as a simulator. 9. Flight of the Hippogriff. It's very simple, and I like that about it. It's the most baseline of attractions in the park, I think. 8. Transformers: The Ride: 3D. This one is very loud. As an autistic person, it hurts my ears for a lot of its run time, so I usually cover them throughout. However, despite that, the simulation mechanics are great, and the 3D effect is still working here, so that's cool. I guess this is the closest we'll get to the IOA Spider-Man attraction on the west coast... 7. DreamWorks Theatre feat. Kung Fu Panda. Another hot take. Yeah, this beats out the roller coaster in my mind because not only does this have a very short wait compared to said roller coaster (helping me fill out the gaps in my day), but the projection effects, especially in the climax, really wow me. I think it's slightly underrated, but it's still not my favorite because it's the most basic of simulators mechanically. I hope this gets new films soon, but I doubt it because it hasn't been touched since opening. 6. Revenge of the Mummy. It's a coaster with really great theming (on the ride itself because the queue is a bit lacking) and a fun track. I enjoyed this one even without any attachment to the IP. I don't have much to say beyond that, though. 5. Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge. I was a gamer before I became a theme park enthusiast. Some of my most cherished gaming memories are playing Double Dash with my dad on the GameCube and playing Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U at GameStop before it came out. However, as an attraction, I feel like it's a bit overwhelming, and the AR tech isn't quite where it needs to be. There is so much to look at, and even without the "Win X number of times" stamp for the app, you'd probably have to ride multiple times to 100% the page. That doesn't even take into account how this ride might age once some of the tech starts breaking down or is discontinued. As an experience now, I still very much enjoy it, but I hope this is just the "first attempt" so to speak of AR stuff that will be improved upon dramatically in the future. 4. The Secret Life of Pets: Off the Leash. This was one of those rides that let me know Universal was finally ready to go beyond the screen stuff it had built the rest of the park upon in recent years. It has some incredible practical effects and animatronics. The queue is a joy to go through. The story is plain, but when there is just so much detail in the set, I never feel bored because my eyes can take in everything else. This also helps balance the park, as we do have a slight oversaturation in thrill rides for a theme park. It's a charming little ride I hope stays for a good long while. 3. Jurassic World: The Ride. It's very hard to dislike this one. Yes, I wish the Mosasaur scene was still the original sauropod scene. I also wish I wasn't sprayed down by the hadrosaur before the Predator Cove portion. However, the animatronics are phenomenal, and the drop is both fun and iconic. Seeing the ride building as you go down the escalators is still very hype. 2. Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. What more could you ask for from a theme park attraction? Unique ride system that compliments the IP. Well-told story. Incredible queue. Amazing blend of practical and screen-based effects. I don't have any particular attachment to Harry Potter as an IP, but it ranks so high because everything just works even with just basic knowledge. If I'm at the park early, I don't even care that it's the least optimal path - I jump on this one to get my day started. The Studio Tour. Forbidden Journey might be the best attraction that Universal Creative has made on the west coast on nearly all fronts, but on a personal note, my favorite attraction is the Studio Tour. When you get a good tour guide, you're going to have a good time. I of course dislike Fast and Furious: Supercharged. I feel like the set of Nope always sets up for something at the end that just never happens, making me always very confused more than scared. I wish the old King Kong animatronic was still around. I wish ALL of the footage used on the monitors would be updated (does anyone else get a headache from the loud DING from The Good Place's trailer, or is that just my autism kicking in again?). However, it's a really chill ride and a great look at the sets. My favorite part is how the ride changes on what's being filmed, and you can actually see those changes sometimes. A hot set for Quantum Leap can look worldly different from a hot set for a movie the tour guide said was forbidden NDA knowledge, even if they take place in the same physical location. Whenever I visit, I always ride this at least once just to see what's happening. I guess that's it. I hope that wasn't too long, but I like talking too much, as most frequent readers here probably know by now. More on reddit.com
