I was a long haul trucker for a couple years so I've driven across the cou try a few times in all sorts of weather. Basically, don't be a dumbass. Pay attention to the weather reports but mostly pay attention to the roads and weather happening. If you start feeling like a snow storm is getting to be too much, find a spot for the night even of it's only noon. Hotels book up FAST in bad weather. Keep your gas tank no lower than 1/4. Preferably at half in case you get stuck in accident or weather delays in the middle.of nowhere. Have road snacks and stuck in snowbank snacks. Blankets. Candles. First aid. Basic emergency kit. Don't drive at night in Ontario. Moose be bastards. Manitoba and Saskatchewan have awful blowing snow and black ice  Weather switch points at Portage la Prairie, Broadview to Wolseley, Belle Plain, Swift Current, and Dunmore. I don't know why, but I found that in Winter those are the spots where you will drive into or out of a weather system. Mountains are snowy. Daytime driving only. Don't cut-off truckers. Big trucks will blind you with blowing snow so don't tailgate them. If the weather is cold and clear, it can be a beaut of a drive. If it's snowy, damp and around zero, it can be a deadly mother.
