Hello,
can you update Bios without cpu plugged in?
Is it a good idea to start a new PC with CPU that isn't supported on your MoBo and then proceed to update the BIOS?
Thanks
I'm gonna flash BIOS using the button on my MSI motherboard. It's my first time building a PC and I get a little bit nervous, so I just want you guys to help me check if the process is correct.
-
download the bios file, rename it and put it into a FAT32 flash drive
-
put on power cables onto the motherboard (I think there are 2 cables, one big and one small?)
-
turn on the power
-
plug the flash drive into the correct USB port
-
push the button and wait
-
until it indicates the completion, I can unplug the drive and turn off the power
Thank you!

Hi there! So I have a b550 tomahawk which I don’t know if I can run with the 5600x without a bios update. Just to be sure I wanna update the bios and I checked out YouTube tutorials on how to do it without a cpu. This is gonna be my first time booting up my pc and the videos all show that they manage to run perfectly fine and run the internet without a cpu however on other videoed where I’ve seen motherboards trying to run without a cpu they can’t display anything on the monitor.
I am thinking of buying MAG A520M VECTOR WIFI, and using 5600G on that motherboard.
It might have very old BIOS, so it needs BIOS upgrade before it can work with 5600G.
Can I update BIOS on this motherboard without CPU installed?
So the motherboard I am planning to buy is the MSI B450M-A PRO MAX II and the cpu is the ryzen 7 5800xt. it says on the motherboard's website that the cpu is supported on the latest beta bios. does this mean i have to flash update the bios, will i need another cpu for that?
Hello, I am upgrading later this year and already have the motherboard ( ASRock B760M Pro RS). Its an LGA 1700 socket so I was thinking of getting a 14th gen i5. I made the build on PCPartpicker and it says I will need a BIOS update (3.04). I checked the ASRock website for my motherboard and it had them up to 6.05. It also showed the methods to update but they were a bit confusing. So my questions are:
-
Will I need a CPU in socket to update?
-
Will it need to post/ get to the boot screen? Can I do that without a CPU?
-
Should I only update 3.04 or just go for the latest one?
I'll share a link in comments to the ASRock page aswell
I have ordered a x670 motherboard and will be buying a 9800x3d cpu. I dont currently own any AMD cpu. I assume the motherboard will not be compatible with the cpu out of the box. So the question is, how do I go about updating the bios without a cpu installed?
It should support bios flashback, which lets you flash bios without a CPU installed from a USB drive. The motherboard manual explains it. Follow the steps carefully.
IMO you should've waited until the 9800X3D was actually available and ordered a 870 or 850 chipset mobo with out of box compatibility with the 9800X3D
Use the USB flashback function on the board to update the BIOS.
Im facing a bit of a dilemma right now, the mobo I’ve bought most likely doesn’t support my CPU out of the box and doesn’t have a BIOS flash feature, I also don’t have a compatible CPU. As far as I can tell, my options are:
-
Return my CPU and get a 13th gen CPU instead - would cost about £50 but I'm not sure I’ll be able to get a refund as I bought it before Christmas.
-
Return my mobo and get one that supports 14th gen CPUs or has a flashback feature - would cost me about £60 more to buy a MSI PRO Z790-P which has M-Flash.
-
Buy an older CPU and update the BIOS with this CPU – I can get a Celeron G6900 for about £66 which I could probably resell for about £30, but this would mean having to install a CPU fan more than once which seems like a hassle and more chance of me effing this up.
-
Take it to a PC shop and get them to update the BIOS – not sure where around me that could do this and how much it would cost, but potentially the easiest solution.
This is my first PC build so I’m looking for the easiest solution, which feels like buying the Z790 mobo. What option would you say is the easiest/least risky? Is there another option I’ve missed? Is it worth trying my CPU first to see if it would post with the current BIOS or is there 0% chance of working?

I have newly bought Gigabyte B650 GAMING X AX ATX AM5 Motherboard and 7800x3D still in boxes
I am waiting for the F6 bios to be released before I start building my system.
When F6 bios comes out, can I update it without inserting the CPU into the motherboard? I aint having that thing explode on me.
Also I wonder how long until F6 actually comes out, I hope its no more than a week? Considering all these voltages discoveries
There is currently F6 but its in beta version still, I dont wanna risk it with a beta version. Or at least waiting for a may beta version
I’m getting a msI mag b550 tomahawk gaming motherboard (no wifi), and it says that It may require bios update for my cpu (Amd ryzen 5 5600x). Some people say that it’s likely that it will come with already updated bios, but I’m scared if it doesn’t and want to be prepared if it doesn’t and want to know how to update it without a cpu. I looked online and people said to copy the bios update file to a fat32 usb and then connect the usb to the motherboard and hold the bios flashback button. But I don’t know how to copy the bios file and which bios update I should copy.
Hello everyone,
I have MSI MPG Z790 Carbon WIFI (non-MAX version) waiting for the 14700K to arrive and I'm ready to build my new system. I'm currently on 6800K.
I saw somewhere being mentioned that I will need an earlier-gen CPU in order to boot my PC and update the BIOS. Is this true? I can't build my system and immediately plug in the USB drive with the latest BIOS and update? Do I really need to buy 12th or 13th gen CPU just to update the BIOS and then put in my 14700K once everything is updated? Will my system even POST with the 14th inside?
Sorry for noobish questions, this is the first time I'm building a new system by myself.
I've found this video, suggesting I could do this on my motherboard as well. And I could do this without the CPU in the socket at all? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZ0X-QFSD1w
EDIT: with the above video and the page 64 of the motherboard manual, I've confirmed that I can update the BIOS without the CPU in the socket at all. I'm leaving this post in case there are some other noobs like me building their system for the first time!

Thank you in advance!
Im currently selecting parts for a pc
this is the parts list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/69nxwg
the motherboard i have selected is the ASRock Z790 Taichi Carrara EATX LGA1700 Motherboard
pcpartpicker says that i might need a bios update for it to work with my 14900k
is it possible to update the bios on this board without the cpu being supported by the current bios?
Hello, i recently bought a new motherboard and new cpu (14700kf) but i don't have a 12th gen cpu to update my motherboard and i dont have the flashback button (i might be wrong), i have an ASROCK B760M PG RIPTIDE motherboard.
I watched a few videos on youtube but didn't see any video that was helpful so i thought reddit might be the way, or i'll just have to find a 12th gen cpu :(
I've bought a A320M-H MotherBoard and a Ryzen 5 5600 CPU, but apparently my MB does not have the latest BIOS update to support my CPU, there is no flashback button and i dont have access to a spare supported cpu, what do i do?
I'm a first time builder and I need to update my bios without cpu, my question being, where can I see what bios version is already installed and what happens when you download the bios thats already installed?
You'll have to download the BIOS on another PC, then prep the BIOS file for "flashing" (updating) via USB drive. Also, if you want to update the BIOS without a CPU, it will take significantly longer, and the motherboard must support a feature called BIOS Flashback.
If you use the same version as what's there already, this is called re-flashing.
Which motherboard and cpu do you have?
Im looking to build a new PC with a Gigabyte B760 DS3H AX and an Intel® Core™ i5 processor 14600KF. Im reading that in order for the motherboard to support a 14th generation CPU it may require a BIOS update.
I was wondering if it is possible to update the BIOS without installing the CPU.
I bought AM5 mobo and I'm afraid it will melt my X3D CPU because of old BIOS. The mobo have Flahsback BIOS button. Can I connect the energy cables and update without installing the CPU?
Apparently need at least a SATA drive connected, which is not a problem. Maybe M2 is also ok?
