Bonjour! I'm coming to Montreal at the end of August and am looking for curtain and upholstery fabric stores. So many good fabric stores have closed across Canada, or only really stock quilting fabric now.
I know Montreal has a lot of garment fabric places, but hoping gor your recommendations for decor fabric?
I'm assuming Saint Hubert as a starting place, but would very much appreciate your go to spots for decor fabric! Merci!

Hi everyone, I just moved from Paris to Montréal, and I'm a bit lost about fabric shopping.
I'm used to places like Les Coupons st Pierre where I could buy quality fabrics like cotton, denim, wool, stuff like that but dirt cheap.
For me, sewing is an occasion to make better quality clothes that I could buy in any retail store, but here I have the feeling that it will be harder to find any.
Also, what is the deal with Canada and stretch fabric ???
I just have Blackbird fabric in mind, maybe Core fabric, but those are e x p e n s i v e.
Do you have other ideas in mind ? Thanks !

I'm in Montreal and a huge garment sewer. There is some stuff on rue St Hubert or around rue Chabanel. On St Hubert I go to C&M Textiles for nice wool suiting / coating and formal wear fabrics. Goodman Fabrics has a lot of everything so can be fun to browse. Kava has all sorts of tools and supplies. Tonitex on St Laurent also has a bunch of stuff. But honestly for most garment fabrics, I do shop at Blackbird and Closet Core and a few other Canadian sites like Spool of Thread and Fine Fabrics Canada . Yeah, they are kind of expensive, but I am happy with their quality and if shopping online you will spend the least amount on shipping through them. I also have a Seamwork membership which gives a small discount to some shops. I occasionally shop online at US sites like Stonemountain Fabric (which has a larger selection) or international sites like The Fabric Store (which has particularly lovely Merino knits), Merchant & Mills, or Atelier Brunette, if I want something specific of theirs. The downside for anything international is exchange rates, shipping costs, and the gamble of whether customs will charge you duty or not (usually yes, and it can be a lot), which ends up being more expensive. I also search for stuff on Etsy as there is so much available there and the pricing and shipping costs are clear.

Bienvenue àMontreal! Saint Hubert (between Jean-talon and Faillon) is where the fabric stores are. Historically there were way more but many have closed over the 10 years or so. However, it is still the best the city has to offer. You’ll also get your other sewing needs met on this strip (eg notions, scissor sharpening etc). Ultratext is my go-to for notions (plan to have cash), Kava is also good for notions and tools. Sam Textiles/Sararex draperies has the selection of wools and wool suiting but the customer service is awful. The older guy is knowledgeable but grumpy, the younger guy is nice but doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Your experience may vary (I hope it’s better than mine!) There is also Club Tissue which has a solid online offering as well as retail stores (but you need a car to get to the stores). Unfortunately fabric in Canada is pretty expensive and limited choice when it comes to wools and silks. Importing is possible but my experience is that the shipping, duty, and taxes basically doubles the price. Hope this helps!
