major English keyboard layouts, both are QWERTY

When buying a ThinkPad you have the option between different keyboard layouts.
I myself have chosen the English UK layout for my current one.
However, one has the option between two different layouts
Backlit Keyboard Black English (UK)
Backlit Keyboard Black English (EU)
(e.g. see here:

I wonder what's the difference between those two layouts. I'd be especially interested on a detail picture for the English (EU) option.
I assume that the key placement and design of the enter/return key differ between the two. Can someone confirm this?
I live in the US & to try something different, I decided to go with a UK keyboard, along with changing the applicable setting in my OS. I used to use the US-International setting with a regular US keyboard before this. Do those of you in one country/region prefer another layout? Is one better than another or is it only whatever one's used to? I don't do traditional touch-typing, but I noticed that if I did, the Enter/Return key on the UK layout is too far to the right for my small finger to hit it with the rest of my fingers on the home row. My old US keyboard has this key horizontal orientation as opposed to vertical. Is there a reason for the differences in symbol key locations like @ " ¬ # ~ \ |? Was it just a matter of when these layouts were developed?
The most important differences are the size and position of the Enter/Return, and a few differences in the layout. The ~ key and the \ key have an entirely different position on both keyboards. Also, the US keyboard has no € label (although it can be entered: Alt+Shift+2).
The International keyboard (‘keyboard type’ = ISO) also has one more key than the US keyboard (‘keyboard type’ = ANSI). Some Apple keyboard layouts use that key for essential characters, and this can cause problems for users with only the US keyboard.
Below is a high-quality visual comparison.
