So secured credit card is suppose to be for the ones with low credit scores and wanna bring it back up. What were your credit scores when you got approved for one? Mine is 561 currently
Would I be eligible for an advantage rate card or should I not waste my time and just apply for the secure credit card?

I got the secured credit card last year when my credit was 541 now i’m at 710! I would def use it. Make sure not to over utilize it.

Go for the secured card if you want a more certain outcome. Keep it for at least a year, then upgrade accordingly if it accomplishes what you need it to.

I have had my secured card for about 3 years. My score is now 700+. Supposedly USAA has a program for upgrading to unsecured cards. I've talked to a representative about it and they have no idea what the requirements are for upgrading a card. I frankly just want my money back at this point as I can stick that 1K in an account with better rates that the current CD USAA has it in. I feel like there is no point in waiting on USAA to do right by me. How much would closing hurt my score. Has anyone actually had their card upgraded?

I just had my secured card upgraded. So it's possible. I used capital one for reference. Just paid the balance off every month.

Unless something has changed, there is no pathway with USAA to unsecure a secured card - I'm open to correction if someone has definitive proof of this policy changing. Other lenders such as Crapitol 1, Disco & Navy Federal tend to have timely pathways, but not USAA. There's a few things to look at: If you have since established numerous other tradelines, at least 5 or so, the affect on your credit should be minimum. If this is your only open line of credit or you only have one or two other accounts, the impact with inevitable be greater. If I'm not mistaken, the maximum you can put on a secured USAA card is $5,000. Essentially this call is on you and will be based on your needs and situation. If you don't need the money and don't care about it being tied up, your best choice is to continue to establish your credit profile until you get around 10+ accounts with a couple years worth of age on your overall profile and THEN close your secured card. By then the impact will be minimum. Credit scores are a revolving door of factors that are literally changing every 30 days. I wouldn't worry about your score nearly as much as continuing to establish a well around, expansive profile overall.
