Just picked up a StarTech USB to Serial Adapter - 1 port - USB Powered - FTDI USB UART Chip - DB9 (9-pin) - USB to RS232 Adapter a few weeks ago after years of fighting with driver issues with my old one. Plugged it in no drivers need and no blue screens yet. More on reddit.com

I just buy the branded FTDI cable from DigiKey or Mouser. I like the one with the electronics in the USB connector and pigtails and add your own DB9. I've never had Windows fail to have the driver preinstalled since Win7. More on reddit.com

Just get any adapter with a FTDI FT232RL Chip. Have been using these for years with Win 7/8/10, Linux/BSD and OSX on one side and Cisco, HP, Raritan, whatever devices on the other side. Never had any problems, it just works. No 3rd party driver needed as well.
