I tried the older driver available here:http://www.prolific.com.tw/US/ShowProduct.aspx?p_id=223&pcid=126And this seemed to work for Windows 11. Weird that an old driver works better than the latest one.I have the PL-2303 TA chipset. Answer from ejohanson on techcommunity.microsoft.com

Problems under Windows 11 with normal Serial Port acess and with USB to Serial Access
I encounter some problems under Windows 11 23H2 to access a simple Serial Port under .NET in C#. My earlier installations with Windows 10 and earlier worked fine with that code and since I try on my new Notebook Dell XPS 9720 which only proposes USB3-C ports I added a USB3-C to USB3.1 Switch on which I added different USB to RS232 Adapters... Issues with rs232 serial to USB driver on Windows 11
Best option is to roll back to win10. Win11 has too much issues with serial or rs232 drivers. As a network engineer i have to console eah day. So we have two types...prolific and ch340. Win10 works fine with the built in ch340 chipset and can console to every switch/router. Prolific works if you manually install the latest driver. But in win11 i had endless issues with both chipsets..even if they say win11 compatible. More on reddit.com

r/networking on Reddit: USB-to-Serial for console that works with Windows 11?
July 9, 2024 -

Need some recommendations from fellow Network Engineers who have already dealt with this. Our org recently updated to Windows 11 and it killed our ability to use our USB to Serial adapters because of Windows core isolation/memory integrity settings. Our domain admins have given up trying to disable memory integrity for us so now it's on me to figure out a viable alternative for our console connections, and I really don't feel like rolling the dice on random purchases.

Anyone have a recommendation for a USB-to-Serial adapter that will work when Windows 11 Core Isolation security settings are all turned on? It really needs to be a legit serial connection on the adapter too because most of our network infrastructure doesn't have native USB console ports and also we are doing Serial over Ethernet in a few places and those require native serial on both sides.

Thanks in advance :)

r/Cisco on Reddit: Issues with rs232 serial to USB driver on Windows 11
March 14, 2023 -

Hello everyone. I'm trying to access a router cli by connecting it to my personal laptop, and it's running windows 11. I downloaded and installed the necessary driver which apparently supports the latest version of win11, but when i connect the port and enter device manager it tells me the driver doesn't support win11. I tried downloading from other websites and uninstalled/reinstalled the driver but to no avail. I'm working in a lab with a couple others and all their devices accessed the router without much issues, theyre all running win10 or earlier so the issue is almost certainly inherit to win11.

If anyone is familiar with this problem and has a solution it would be much appreciated.

This is not unheard of. Windows 10 and 11 tend to auto-install the latest drivers for things, including the drivers for the USB-Serial cable. The workaround is to install an older version of the driver.

Hello, I'm Louie, and I'm happy to help you today. Hope you're doing well and safe there. I'm sorry that you're having trouble with your USB ports.

I would suggest you to try the methods provided below:

Method 1 - Check Power Management Settings

  1. Right-click on the Start menu button and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers
  3. Look for the first USB Root Hub. In some computers, it could be just one. Right-click on it and select Properties.
  4. Go to Power Management tab. Here, unmark the box beside Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. Click on OK.
  5. Repeat Step 3 and Step 4 for other USB Root Hub devices under Universal Serial Bus controllers.

Method 2 - Check Power Supply

  1. Unplug your laptop’s power supply, along with the charger plug.
  2. Now, restart the laptop.
  3. Reconnect the USB device to the USB port of your laptop.
  4. Plug charger and power supply back on your laptop.

Method 3 - Uninstall Drivers

  1. Right-click on the Start menu button and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Universal Bus Controllers. Here, right-click on the USB Root Hub select Uninstall device.
  3. Repeat the above step for remaining USB Root Hub.
  4. Restart your computer.

After performing the restart, the Windows will recognize USB Root Hubs as new device and will install its drivers automatically.

Method 4 - Update Drivers

  1. Right-click on the Start menu button and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Universal Bus Controllers. Here, right-click on the USB Root Hub select Update driver.
  3. Now click on Search automatically for updated driver software. This will download and install the updated drivers for USB Root Hub on your computer.
  4. Repeat the above two steps for remaining USB Root Hub.
  5. Restart your computer.

Method 5 - Turn Off Fast Startup

  1. Right-click on the Start menu button and select Power Options.
  2. Under Related Settings, click on Additional power settings.
  3. On the left side of the window, click on Choose what the power button does.
  4. Now, select Change settings that are currently unavailable. This will let you change the shutdown settings.
  5. Under Shutdown settings, unmark the box beside Turn on fast startup (recommended). And click on Save changes.
  6. Restart your computer.

Method 6 - Disable USB Selective Suspend Setting

  1. Right-click on the Start menu button and select Power Options.
  2. Under Related Settings, click on Additional power settings.
  3. Now, go to Change plan settings of your selected plan.
  4. Select Change advanced power settings.
  5. Look for USB Settings and expand it. Here, change the USB selective suspend setting to Disabled. Now click on OK.

Method 7 - Troubleshoot the issue

  1. Go to Cortana and type Troubleshoot. Select the same from results.
  2. Click on Hardware and Devices.
  3. The Windows will check for issues. When done, click on Apply Repair Automatically or Apply this Fix, whichever appears.
  4. Restart your computer.

Hope this helps and looking forward for good results.

Kind regards,

Louie
