Yes, you need to connect both power and USB to the NAS. Power provides power. USB provides a data connection so the UPS can communicate with the NAS to tell it e.g. that the power has failed, how much battery is left etc, so the NAS can act accordingly (go into low power mode or shut down when battery reaches x%, for instance) More on reddit.com

Hey there!

I recently wanted to buy an UPS for my DS920+ for power backup, and found their compatibility list.

Where I live, there are no available options for the compatible UPSs, and the few rare ones are extremely overpriced. Hence, I wanted to know if the below UPS work fine, as they are from a compatible brand:

APC Back-UPS BX1100C 1100VA/660W, 230V
APC Back-UPS BX600C 600VA/360W, 230V

Are these fine? Or can you please recommend a reasonable one which works available in my region (India).

I have tried three or four UPS devices, very cheap, not coming from reputable well known companies (like APC) and all of them where compatible with Synology. I believe there must be a generic driver for UPS devices so the compatibility is greater than shown in the website. Synology though lists what they have tested, but they haven't tested everything out there.

lil one is fine, your DS only pulls a max of ~50 watts, so the little one should buffer all the momentary/couple of minute long blips and gives ya almost an hour for the NAS to gracefully shut down.

Hi,

I’m trying to setup my new 920+ and don’t want to plug it in the wall due to poor power in my house. So I just got my Eaton 5SC 500 and was wondering what is the correct way to plug my NAS into the ups.

I plugged the usb cable provided with the UPS into the ups then the NAS.

Now do I plug the NAS power supply directly into one of the the battery/surge protected outlets on the UPS(which I think is the correct way), into the wall, or don’t plug it into anything and just have the usb connection?

I also watched a video of a person using an IEC adapter.

Beginner with all this and want to make sure I’m doing ensuring correctly to avoid costly mistakes down the road.
