May 22, 2025 - I spent two months testing the Dwarf 3 smart telescope, and it changed my perspective of astrophotography. John Carlsen/CNET · Photography is one of my most consistent creative practices, and I've dabbled in astrophotography, which is photography of stars, planets, moons and other celestial objects in the night sky. I've used my cameras for astrophotography with varying levels of success, but the main issue I have faced is a total lack of tools to track the motion of stars during long exposures.

February 26, 2026 - Remember that with the DWARF 2, at least when I had it, you had to use a straw to polar align. With the DWARF 3, EQ Mode can be achieved in just a couple of minutes and it’s honestly very easy. With EQ mode activated, you can shoot 60 second exposures and not be limited to 15 seconds max. The Veil Nebula below was taken using 60 second exposures, and as you can see, the stars are round and pinpoint thanks to EQ mode. ... August 15, 2025 - Most of what I’ve written so far in relation to using the Dwarf 2 essentially applies to the Dwarf 3. However, now that I’ve had time to put the Dwarf 3 through its paces for astro targets, there is no doubt that the enhanced features do make a significant difference to both the user experience and results.

The Dwarf 3 flawlessly located and centered each target, impressively performing despite a minor hiccup with EQ mode. The 10,000 milliampere-hour battery lasted throughout the night and, if needed, can be recharged while the telescope is powered on and in use.

February 23, 2026 - Connecting my phone to the Dwarf 3 took about one minute, and after that, I downloaded the latest firmware, which again took a couple of minutes. My first target was the Sun. I wanted to see if there were any sunspots following recent aurora activity. I put on the included solar filter and used the app to move the camera to my target.

March 9, 2026 - Before heading out to put the Dwarf 3 to the test, I followed the instructions on the start up guide and downloaded the Dwarf Lab app. This turned out to be a great idea because the app interface isn’t nearly as neat as the packaging, and many of the functions are hidden within other menus. I also used this time to connect my smartphone to the Dwarf 3, explore the basic controls, check for updates, and troubleshoot any potential issues.

November 17, 2025 - You cannot adjust the focus on the Dwarf 3 wide-angle lens, and while we thought the focus was excellent for daytime use, we did feel the starscapes were slightly out of focus.

February 1, 2025 - Sometimes it would take repeated attempts to connect to the telescope, at other times the connection dropped, even when stood within a meter of the Dwarf 3. That’s not ideal when you’re taking multiple exposures that might take 30 mins or more to complete. The app itself could also be more friendly – it’s certainly not as easy to use as the one that came with the Odyssey Pro.
