I just bought one yesterday at Herman Miller, and spent a lot of time on the leather selection. I ended up going with the black all-grain. The other one I was seriously considering was Prone, but I didn't care for Stow. Dream Cow and Royal Hide are ones that aren't listed on their website, but that you can get custom made. There are a lot of fans of those two in r/eames . Dream Cow is about the same price as all-grain I believe, and the Royal Hide is more expensive. BUT since they are custom-ordered leather, they add a 5% upcharge for either of those. The all-grain, Dream Cow and Royal Hide are all Edelman leathers . I thought the all-grain felt great, and wasn't interested in adding another 5% to the cost. You can get an additional 4% off during this 25% sale through the HM trade program if you own a small business or are a designer, architect, etc. A friend of mine who qualifies signed up yesterday morning, and they honored it when I went into the store a couple hours later, even though it technically takes a couple business days to get the application approved. And it was a rep in the store who originally told me that I could use a friend's trade account as long as I had their permission. I am pretty happy with 29% off. I’m getting ready to go to war (bidding) for one and I’ve set aside 4500 for it. If the condition is cherry and it’s what YOU want, anything below 5k is basically good for used. Brand new starts at 6500 so my personal comfort zone is at least 2k less than new. Ones that need a lot of work will pop up from time to time between 2k and 3500 but then you need another 1k-2k for restoration so now you’re creeping into that area where it might be worth waiting for another one. I am keeping an eye on the Eames lounge chairs as I plan on buying one in the upcoming year. Just missed the August sales. But no rush. I see them come up at auctions or listed on ebay/Chairish/1stdibs and I can see that you can buy a used Eames in good condition for what turns out to be comparable prices as buying a brand new one once factoring in auction commissions.
And plenty of Eames private resales are effectively asking the same as a brand new one.
I'm aware of subtle differences in wood and leather that may have a factor. But in general, what prompts people to pay the equivalent of a new Eames for a secondhand one at auction?

When you add the commission and taxes, you're looking at a final sales price of closer to $5k, which makes it comparable to buying a brand new Eames, no? And we haven't even factored in any potential shipping costs.
