Put everything into the shipping box and weigh it - that's your total weight. Then, add up the weights of the individual items such that it's equal to the total weight of the box and contents. Each item must be a minimum weight of 1 oz and have a minimum value of .01 - try to combine similar items and adjust the quantity/weights/values accordingly. It sucks when customers have an additional page of items because it all wouldn't fit on the first page of the form. Don't put "bag of tiny common fossils"; simply use "Fossils". Just use PirateShip.com and pay for the postage at the same time rather than monkeying around with doing the customs forms separate and then trying to pay postage at what is likely a manual office. "Scan prepaid acceptance, please, thank you, bye." The account there is free, you'll also get price comparisons to UPS (not that UPS is ever cheaper), and you just have to print the label/customs form label which you can put on the front of your package. As for the specific issue, they're likely trying to scan it pre-paid acceptance and it's not postage, it's just the customs form. The computer should prompt for the customs form scan if it's not a manual office, and if it is a manual office, they can't accept digital customs forms anyway. More on reddit.com

You should still have one copy inside the package, the rest has been replaced by a uniform label on the outside that lists the required data + it is sent digitally to the receiving country. You should get into the practice now of using HS (harmonization) codes and specific descriptions as well as country of origin, even for gifts. IE: Shirt - nope. Men's cotton shirt, yes. Due to the changes in the global marketplace and how everyone can now be a business mailer, countries have drastically cracked down on the required data (hello Ireland, thanks for all the returned packages...) September 24, 2021Customs Form—post office said I have to fill it out online, “no more carbon copy forms allowed.” Meanwhile, the Customs Form Tool on usps.com won’t generate a form.
Just dropping by to share a similar problem. Nothing happens when I click the print button on Page 14 of 15. A "processing" image flashes for a fraction of a second, but nothing else occurs. I just spent an hour filling out this online form. Very frustrating. More on reddit.com

I'm sending a Christmas gift to a friend in Australia, but I don't know how the customs forms work. It asks for the weight and price of every item, and says it will be validated against the total weight. A lot of things are free, is $0 acceptable? And some things are like stickers, and literal pieces of paper... like a flyer, and a single coloring sheet/info page on a local park... how do I get a weight for these?
Plus, I have a lot of little chunks of fossil pieces (confirmed with US customs, and Australia customs, and the US Office of Law Enforcement that these are allowed to be shipped to Australia) but the customs forms say "weight" and "how many". They are so small, I don't know that a weight will even pick up... would "a bag of tiny common fossils" and the combined weight of the bag be appropriate, or how would I list that?

Edit: in case anyone sees this and is also wondering! The forms specific not to lump things together and to be as specific as possible... there are not many lines at all, and I had to lump everything together in vague categories lol. Like any form of papers, brochures, stickers, photos, etc I put under "stationary". The package sent perfectly fine with no issues!

Hi, maybe I can get further insight here.
I printed a customs form using the USPS tool here: https://cfo.usps.com/index
However the staff at two local post offices have not been able to accept it and ask me to fill out a physical form instead. The handwritten form is not a good option for me.
In one case, they glanced at the customs form and said it "doesn't match up".
In another, they scanned it but received an error that the form was invalid. They received the same error after typing in the code manually.
What are some issues that would cause a customs form to become invalid?

Answer (1 of 6): In my 20+ years of selling online I’ve never had an issue sending bulk items. If they are a similar group of articles just put a general description. You really don’t need to itemize it. If you’re sending within country you shouldn’t even need to detail.
