London Postcodes List, explanation and meaning
The Centre of London is given the letter 'C' for CENTRAL, and is split into WC1 (where WC stands for West Central), WC2, EC1 (East Central), EC2, EC3, EC4. For anyone who doesn't know London that system is a little misleading. The EC1-4 postcodes are actually referred to now as the 'City of London'.

What is a “valid” UK postcode?
A valid UK postcode is in the format I’ve explained above, such as: N1-8DU. If you’re getting the error message “invalid postcode,” sometimes your browser settings or website settings are incorrect.

If you’re shopping online (either in the UK or from a UK retailer) but from another country, check that your settings are ticked to “UK” or “GBP”.

Also, make sure the website you’re shopping in actually ships to the UK. If you still have trouble, contact the retailer.

The General Post Office under the control of the Postmaster General directed Sir Rowland Hill to devise the area in 1856 and throughout its history it has been subject to reorganisation and division into increasingly smaller postal units, with the early loss of two compass points and a minor retraction in 1866. In London (as postally defined), postal districts created and mapped in 1917 remain unchanged today despite Greater London, created in April 1965, covering a much larger administrative area. The London post town covers 40% of Greater London and the remaining. Additionally, there were too few postcodes available to meet the level of demand of addresses in districts in central London ...

London Postal Code & London Zip Code 2026 (& Diagram!)
October 31, 2025 - A 5-digit zip code for London or the UK (better known as a postcode) doesn’t always cover your bases. London postal codes range between 5 and 7 alpha and numeric values, so the 5-digit rule doesn’t necessarily apply like it does in the United States. There are some postcodes that contain 5 digits, but don’t assume that your postcode is correct as soon as you hit that 5-digit mark! There are about 1.8 million valid postcodes in the UK alone, with London itself encompassing over 600 square miles and including over 34,000 postal codes.

However, geographically the numbering appears arbitrary as, for instance, NW1 is central, but NW2 is far out and doesn't border NW1. This is because, when the numbered system was first introduced in 1917, the postcodes numbered 1 (E1, NW1, W1, SW1, SE1) were most central, then subsequent numbers ...

List of All the London Postal Codes - Wander Onwards
July 10, 2024 - Well, simply put, they’re the UK’s equivalent of a zip code. It goes at the end of the address and helps the postal service send it to the correct office and the right postal route! There are plenty of streets in London that have the same or similar names, so it can get confusing at the sorting office. Postal codes, or postcodes as they’re more commonly referred to, help prevent your parcel or letter from going to the wrong place.
