Valve makes almost $50 million per employee, raking in more cash per person than Google, Amazon, or Microsoft — gaming giant's 350 employees on track to generate $17 billion this year | Tom's Hardware
1 month ago - It’s publicly available Handbook for New Employees [PDF], first printed in 2012, states, “Our profitability per employee is higher than that of Google or Amazon or Microsoft, and we believe strongly that the right thing to do in that case is to put a maximum amount of money back into each employee’s pocket.” The company claims it has one of the best compensation packages in the industry, and we can see this in the leaked data shared by The Verge, which shows that Valve spent nearly $450 million on employee salaries, with a weighted average of more than $1.3 million per employee. The company likely achieved this because it’s a completely privately owned corporation, beholden to neither stockholders nor private equity.

August 26, 2021 -
How come Gabe Newell owns only 50% of the Valve; even though its not listed on stock exchanges and their wildly popular handbook has said that they ve never taken EXTERNAL FUNDING for the necessary freedom ? Who got the rest 50% (is it his wife) and what benefits do they have since they cant in no way cash out as Gabe would not cede control of the company?

Employees receive stock or stock options as part of their compensation, and are therefore part owners of the company. It seems likely that the executives and the long-term employees of the company own most of the stock, but that is hard to verify because the company doesn’t make it public.

He got divorced, it's extremely likely his ex wife received stock. Billionaires don't sell stock (because it's taxed at sale) instead they offset stock as collateral against margin loans, i.e. borrow $1B against $4B of stock and pay 0.7% a year in interest, vs paying 20% capital gains selling $1B of stock, and losing control of your company, as well as dropping the stock value. Then they can spend that $1B or put it in an index fund (or better) so they are paying 0.7% and then making 8% on the market with it. Free money. You can do this too just scale everything down, but you won't get offered 0.7%.
