It may look a bit out of place with the other guests - copper is an autumn color, as velvet is an autumnal fabric - but more than anything, what kind of velvet is it? Because if it's polyester velvet, you're going to cook in there - short sleeved or not. You might not want to be the guest in all the pictures sweating in the copper velvet dress during their summer wedding in the Cape.... I personally wouldn't do it, no matter how much I love the dress (and I tend to be extremely fashion-adventurous). More on reddit.com

I have a dress that is practically a copy of this one but the floral design is different and contrasts more against the black dress. I have a wedding this weekend that has a secondary reception that I realized had a less formal dress code (cocktail) but I'm not sure what cocktail is. I don't really want to buy another dress but I will if this is inappropriate. Looking for input.

Velvet as a material is totally fine, but it's usually more of an autumn and winter fabric. Cocktail is usually knee to tea length. I say usually because I'm not a big fan of pushing people to buy stuff they don't need again. If you can afford to, getting a simple cocktail dress could make sense because it's a really common dress code for lots of events. It could be a bit of a wardrobe staple for weddings and such.
