Teen is mowing lawns this summer for some extra spending money.
We started with people paying my Venmo- but he needs some autonomy to learn.
Looked into teen Venmo + debit card. Concern that he can’t really save money from there and will have access to all of it (and the safety of that?)
Other simple ideas that we can help manage and make it easy for neighbors to pay?
Venmo really seems like the easiest person to person payment, just wanting to make sure I’m not missing any potential headaches! Thanks!

An actual checking account with a real bank or credit union. Venmo is fine for receiving payments, then he can transfer it to his bank account. Money shouldn't be held in Venmo for any longer than it takes to log into the app and initiate a transfer after receiving it. Venmo and other similar apps are not FDIC insured, so if they go tits up tomorrow, any money held in there is gone.

Zelle with a savings account? Money probably isn't huge, and getting experience moving money in and out of Venmo perhaps isn't the worst idea, either.

I just asked about this, and here was the response from Venmo. Sure, when a teen turns 18, their Venmo Teen Account will be converted into a regular Venmo account. They will continue to have access to their Venmo balance, transaction history, friends list, and any other information associated with their account. However, they will no longer be under the supervision of their parent or guardian. They will also have the ability to link their own bank account, debit card, or credit card to their Venmo account. I think they convert it to an adult account at that time. I’m not sure if it’s automatic or has to be requested by the parent. At that point they will probably ask for ID info to transition the account to an adult account.

The actual what? I did it from my app in my phone and all the sudden my daughters account gets flagged and my account gets frozen. Mind you she can’t even use her card yet because it doesn’t come until Sept 8th.
Then they tell me it will take 7-10 business days to unfreeze my account. So now I have no access to any of the money I have there. Utter bs.

Stay away from Venmo period! It's very useful and theres better options out there like chime! Venmo can't be used with a lot of services because the type of card it is, get yourself a chime account it is just like a banking account and is accepted in more places then Venmo. The only thing Venmo may be goo for is friends sending money on it.

There's a reason for this. Most banks, even Apple, have restrictions for children under 14. My son, 11, has his own Capital One account and a debit card that he can't put in without me. The app restricts him. We don't have a branch in town so we deposit his money at CVS or Walgreens but I have to be there. My 14 year old has the same account but without the same limitations. People can send her money. For my son, he gets paid by neighbors in cash and we either deposit it together or he gives it to me and I transfer money into his account, which takes longer. Another suggestion is Greenlight. Kids get a code to have money transferred into their accounts. I considered this product but there is a monthly fee unless you're associated with certain banks.
