You can't use any combustion appliance for heat unless the exhaust is ducted to the outside. There is an exception in the code for "decorative" fireplaces, but these are dangerous and depend on you only using them for short periods in a drafty house to prevent the buildup of toxic combustion products. Look into either adding an electric mini-split heat-pump or getting a smarter thermostat for your pellet stove so the heat-up time is less apparent. Edit: Slight wording change. Maybe I shouldn't say decorative gas appliances are "dangerous" but I've never met an expert who wanted one in their house, and it just seems like a bad idea to burn something indoors without a vent to the outside. Indoor Propane Heaters
Propane and natural gas burning devices can be designed to produce no carbon monoxide. Even the big natural gas furnace in my Wisconsin home produces no carbon monoxide even though it is vented outside. (It has been tested.) They do produce carbon dioxide and water in large amounts. They do consume gas and oxygen in large quantities. Usually the open flame heaters have an oxygen sensor for use indoors... More on irv2.com

Hey all, always thankful for y'all help. I am considering adding a propane heater to the inside of my house. Living room kitchen to be particular. I have a pellet stove that I absolutely love except for the fact it takes 1 1/2 hours to heat up my house. I was considering adding a propane forced air heater or something similar but I see they are limited to heating roughly 300 square feet unless I get a forced air cannon looking one. In the mornings I don't want to start a fire before work and when I get home it's frigid. Any opinions on what I could I do or what kind of propane heater would work best? My range is propane powered so I assume there is not health concerns with an interior propane heater? Any opinion are more than welcome and thank you again.

December 2, 2022 -

Hi everyone. First time poster here, apologies if I’ve overlooked any rules.

I feel like I’m running in circles here, as I’ve been revisiting this around once a week for the last several months, and now that winter is here — it’s becoming urgent, yet I am still unable to find what I need.

I have a large shed which I repurposed as a small electronics workshop earlier this year. It is a custom-built in-ground shed (built a few years ago and never fully finished), with windows/doors and electric, but no insulation. The latter is becoming a huge problem, since winter is coming fast. I am currently heating it with an electric space heater, but this thing eats up too much power and doesn’t give off enough heat.

All I need is either a gas/diesel (preferably) or propane (ok too) heater, which either:

  • has a dedicated exhaust hose, so I can place it in my workshop and run the hose out the window, or

  • has a dedicated heating hose, so I can place it right outside my window and run the hose into my workshop (without the exhaust of course).

I feel like these requirements are extremely basic and common, which makes me think that I am either overlooking something very simple (i.e. simple enough that it’s implied and thus not mentioned on any product pages), or what I want really does not exist for some reason.

So far, all I’ve been coming across are “indoor ‘vent-free’ propane heaters” (wtf?), or open-burning directed diesel/propane heaters that mix the heat and exhaust streams together (meant for outdoor use).

Was really hoping someone could direct me towards what I’m looking for (or tell me that it really doesn’t exist, which would really surprise me).

Thanks in advance to everyone, and sorry again if this is the wrong sub for this.

Indoor Propane Heaters
February 24, 2021 - Gas stoves, fires, heating boilers, gas-powered water heaters, paraffin heaters, and solid fuel-powered water heaters are all potential sources of carbon monoxide." Your Wisconsin gas furnace (introduces) no carbon monoxide BECAUSE it is vented to the outside... It is still capable of producing carbon monoxide.. The venting is the design feature that keeps it from allowing any carbon monoxide into your house... Even with a perfect AFR (air fuel ratio), time, neglect, dirt, etc., can allow it to start producing carbon monoxide... My propane home furnace, as do most central gas furnaces that I am aware of, uses a heat exchanger...

Direct Vent And Vent-Free Propane Space Heaters | Admiral Propane
January 12, 2021 - A direct-vent space heater is more expensive to install than a vent-free option and is generally less efficient; however, it can produce as much as double the Btu output of a vent-free model—a big consideration, especially if you need to heat a larger space. Vent-free propane heaters are less expensive to install than direct vent heaters and offer greater installation flexibility, since they don’t require access to an external wall for venting.
