Does anyone use ventless heaters for their garage?
In their heater section they have ... ventless heaters. The biggest is a 30,000 btu. I was thinking of using a ventless for my 30x48 garage just to keep it above freezing. Then when I work in the shop maybe a 75K Reznor. The reason being that the ventless appear to be much more efficient. I would think it would cost a lot less to run that ventless all winter than it would a reznor that is only 82% efficient. Any thoughts? To avoid these ads, REGISTER NOW! ... Garage heat- Natural gas options/vent or ventless? - Golf Simulator Forum
I’m trying to figure out what ... or ventless? Is this an hvac install or does a plumber run the gas lines? Those of you who went through this install if you don’t mind me asking what unit you picked out and what labor costs ended up if you hired someone. Thanks! John You’ll need a gas guy to run the gas line but installing the heater is easy. I recommend the Hot Dawg Garage heater by moline. It’s perfect for that and comes ... More on golfsimulatorforum.com

Mr. Heater 30,000 BTU Vent Free Safe for Garage
They appear safe enough (blue flame usually means it’s outputting little to no CO) and of course install it per the instructions so it’s not at risk of tipping. I doubt whether moisture brought up by the other commenter would be much of an issue (over and above what would be there already in a Midwest winter). That said, whether this is the right heater for your space depends on what you’re wanting to get out of it. Aside from requiring a new gas line, the main consideration is that it’s a convection heater. So, it will heat the space relatively slowly and need to be operating most of the time via a thermostat. Contrast with an electric forced air heater like this one . This would heat the space quickly and be used mainly when you’re in the space. For example, turning it on 15 min before you’re ready to be in there, then letting it cycle on and off to maintain the set temp, then turning it off when you’re done for the day. We have one similar to this in a large garage/ceramics studio and use it in the way I’m describing, and we’ve been very happy with it and don’t have to worry about gas safety. The only downsides of the electric forced air heater are utility cost and noise. I wouldn’t say it’s loud but definitely would be more noticeable that the gas heater. Cost will depend on how big your space is, how often you’re using it and at what temp, and the price of gas in your area (probably cheaper than electricity, but also recognizing that the gas heater may be running more often than the electric one). There are also gas forced air heaters, which may be a good trade off. The other commenter mentioned one and here’s another example . These do require a vent, but that would probably reduce the safety (and moisture) concerns. More on reddit.com

November 16, 2010 - I had a ventless in my 24 x 36 garage right after I had it built. I went with the ventless because I didn't want a exhaust pipe through the new walls. The heater was a 30K also, and worked well. But, be prepared for lots of moisture since the heating process makes water. Mine was a natural gas model and after 2-3 years, there was a smell associated with the heater.

October 30, 2020 - 30,000 BTU wall mounted ventless gas heater is all you need. I have one mounted in garage and heat whole house from ground up about 2300 sq ft. Also have ventless fireplace on ground floor for extra cozyness but when in 30's not needed but under 30 to zero it is coming on.

r/HomeImprovement on Reddit: Mr. Heater 30,000 BTU Vent Free Safe for Garage
January 24, 2024 -

Morning all,

I built a bar / office in my garage during COVID that I use all the time in the warmer months (northern Illinois). I intend to run gas to the garage to install a heater. My dad proactively bought me a Mr. Heater 30,000 BTU Vent Free Blue Flame Natural Gas Heater for Christmas. Are these vent free heaters safe? I'm finding mixed reviews online and don't want to install a safety concern.

Thanks!

I just put a heater in my garage (Minneapolis area) I think you're gonna be a lot happier with the vented variety. The one that u/CRTsdidnothingwrong posted looks nice, but I went with this one https://www.menards.com/main/heating-cooling/heaters/gas-garage-heaters/mr-heater-reg-big-maxx-dual-fuel-forced-air-garage-heater/f260550/p-1444441200665-c-6861.htm it's about a third of the price (Especially if you can wait for their 11% off to start) and can be vented through the wall or ceiling. It heats up the garage very quickly, so most of the time I set it at 40, and turn it up if I'm gonna be in there for a while. So far, it's been great.

January 21, 2005 - The gas that been burned gives off vaper, CO, fumes, sometime ordors in the boiler stays in the heat exchanger/cell, and goes right out side up the flue pipe. Nothing is dumped into the home.. I would put this cover on.. Might of been left off by accident. Ventless heater, all of the of the burned byproducts is dumped right into the living space.
