That computer does not normally have a VGA video port and VGA almost always uses a DE-15 connector. Older, antique, CGA and EGA video used a DE-9 connector as did Serial data ports. The convention is that CGA/EGA use female connectors on both the computer and monitor, requiring a male-to-male cable, while the 9 pin serial connectors were male on the computer. The info I found indicates that the Optiplex 7050 has a 9-pin male SERIAL port. Video is handles by a combination of one HDMI and two DisplayPort connectors. The cable you are looking for WILL NOT WORK. More on reddit.com

I just got a Optiplex 7050 SFF Desktop PC and Dell Monitor. I had to order a VGA cord and got one with 15 pins instead of 9. I need a male with 15 pins to female with 9 but I can’t find one online. Should I get an adapter instead? I’m the most tech illiterate gen Z so sorry if this is really dumb.

you can't find an adapter because there's no such thing. your choices with dell are mostly displayport and sometimes hdmi and those can be adapted to vga if you really gotta use it.
