r/VictorianEra on Reddit: Victorian-themed living room and associated furniture
July 25, 2023 -
I just finished school and am moving in a couple of months to another state for my job. I want to set my living room to look Victorian-themed, and I am looking for some inspiration if some of you have set up something similar in a regular apartment. Also, what would be a good place to look for furniture (couches, TV tables, artwork/decor, dining table, coffee table, rugs etc.) to go with it?

Well… that could involve a lot of over-decoration with elaborate design features. If you look at pictures of actual Victorian drawing rooms… it’s a lot. There is a LOT happening there for people who are accustomed to more modern taste. For me, it’s too cluttered and claustrophobic. Look at images of “modern Victorian design” and you’ll see a scaled-back version. And realistically, that explosion of stuff was fairly limited to people who could afford to buy it. Single men wouldn’t have had doilies everywhere, and of course not all women were into their homes dripping with red velvet. It’s worth trying to suss out what you specifically like about the aesthetics. Are you into the lacy “romantic” concept? Liking dark, heavy wood? Dreaming of bed curtains? Gothic grandeur? For the most part, furniture is furniture except houses didn’t have closets. You would have had lots of folding/stacking of clothes or using a wardrobe. Not for nothing— my parents hid their TVs for years. One was in a large Chinese cabinet and another in a closet recess. Nothing wrong with disguising the giant black square.

Need help with living room layout and decorating. 1880's Victorian
Some must haves with the redecoration: We have a TV lift cabinet that must find a home somewhere in the room since I can't stand the look of a TV but since this is our living room I might have a revolt on my hands if I didnt find a spot for the TV somewhere; the room must be comfortable for lounging around but decent enough not to look out of place in my 1880's victorian, particularly since the room is located off of the front foyer just inside the main entrance; wall color needs to go, very tired of the red walls; curtains must stay, hand painted silk and spent too much to replace them anytime soon; would prefer a large ottoman instead of a coffee table since the kids will put their feet up on it whether its a table or an ottoman meant for feet. I would greatly appreciate any advise on layout or design, I need to get moving but not sure where to begin.
