How to process images of a video, frame by frame, in video streaming using OpenCV and Python - Stack Overflow
I want to do some image processing on the frames of a video which is being uploaded to my server. I just want to read the available frames and write them in a directory. Then, wait for the other part of the video to be uploaded and write the frames to the directory. And , I should wait for each frame to be completely uploaded then write it to a file. Can you tell me how can I do it with OpenCV (Python... More on stackoverflow.com

I made an introduction to Video Processing with Python and OpenCV
Your videos are fantastic. I love how you break down topics into their basic components and then work your way back up. I would be really interested in seeing a video where you just informally talk about your methodologies when diving into a data set and looking for insights. For example, I work with a lot of user usage data and I feel comfortable manipulating, cleaning, and visualizing data. But I would like to improve when it comes to some of the next level analysis. Deciding on PQLs, segmenting customers based on product usage, identifying early churn indicators, etc. These questions will vary on a case-by-case basis, but a couple examples to get the ball rolling could include... Where do you like to start your analysis when looking at a new data set? And for multiple datasets when some of the information is related and some is not How you decide what is relevant (both statistically and for telling a story)? How do you recognize the sunk cost fallacy and stop your current train of thought to go down a more productive path? How do you avoid your own personal biases and assumptions about the data you are working with? Any other tips and advice you have about your process More on reddit.com

[OC] VidGear - A OpenCV Multi-Threaded Video Processing Python Library with Full Picamera support.
Hello - this library is awesome, but I'm having a hard time clearing a frame. For some reason, in a 'while True" loop, a Camgear stream keeps loading the same frame. What's odd, is in the same loop, 3 other cameras are loading a fresh frame each loop no problem. Yet this one camera is not. I'd be happy to share my code if you're curious. Do you have any idea what I can do to make sure the loop grabs a fresh new frame each time? More on reddit.com

Tutorial on Image Processing

The guy who made yolo has a good lecture series he made public complete with homework assignments hosted on his github. It starts with some low level stuff.

Edit: if you want something more comprehensive this is probably the best online course for image processing, the guy wrote one of the best books on it https://www.coursera.org/learn/image-processing

In video processing, each frame is processed individually or in sequence. OpenCV provides methods to access, manipulate, and analyze individual frames, such as resizing, cropping, flipping, and rotating them.

October 15, 2025 - A video is nothing but a series of images that are often referred to as frames. So, all you need to do is loop over all the frames in a video sequence, and then process one frame at a time.

After reading the documentation of VideoCapture. I figured out that you can tell VideoCapture, which frame to process next time we call VideoCapture.read() (or VideoCapture.grab()).

The problem is that when you want to read() a frame which is not ready, the VideoCapture object stuck on that frame and never proceed. So you have to force it to start again from the previous frame.

Here is the code

import cv2

cap = cv2.VideoCapture("./out.mp4")
while not cap.isOpened():
    cap = cv2.VideoCapture("./out.mp4")
    cv2.waitKey(1000)
    print "Wait for the header"

pos_frame = cap.get(cv2.cv.CV_CAP_PROP_POS_FRAMES)
while True:
    flag, frame = cap.read()
    if flag:
        # The frame is ready and already captured
        cv2.imshow('video', frame)
        pos_frame = cap.get(cv2.cv.CV_CAP_PROP_POS_FRAMES)
        print str(pos_frame)+" frames"
    else:
        # The next frame is not ready, so we try to read it again
        cap.set(cv2.cv.CV_CAP_PROP_POS_FRAMES, pos_frame-1)
        print "frame is not ready"
        # It is better to wait for a while for the next frame to be ready
        cv2.waitKey(1000)

    if cv2.waitKey(10) == 27:
        break
    if cap.get(cv2.cv.CV_CAP_PROP_POS_FRAMES) == cap.get(cv2.cv.CV_CAP_PROP_FRAME_COUNT):
        # If the number of captured frames is equal to the total number of frames,
        # we stop
        break

Use this:

import cv2
cap = cv2.VideoCapture('path to video file')
count = 0
while cap.isOpened():
    ret,frame = cap.read()
    cv2.imshow('window-name', frame)
    cv2.imwrite("frame%d.jpg" % count, frame)
    count = count + 1
    if cv2.waitKey(10) & 0xFF == ord('q'):
        break

cap.release()
cv2.destroyAllWindows() # destroy all opened windows

One thing I'm trying to get more comfortable with is creating video like what you suggest where I'm not even coding but more talking about topics and general approaches to problems.
