Is underlayment necessary when LVP has pad? - Bogleheads.org
Follow the manufacturer's rules. Underlayment was needed with older laminate flooring, as that stuff was so rigid and often did not have an attached pad, and you needed the acoustic cushion. The joints were tongue and groove, so once you locked them, they were vertically stable. More on bogleheads.org
Vinyl plank flooring with underlayment attached
The real issue is that the flooring is not made for that. If you add another layer of something that is semi-flexible underneath (not like a layer of plywood), then stepping on the planks can cause them to flex just a little bit more than intended. That, in turn, puts more pressure on the thin vinyl edge strips that interlock the planks, which can cause the planks to crack and separate. And then your floor is ruined. More on reddit.com

Do I need padding under vinyl plank flooring?
Yes. I've done it with and without. I regret the without. Every floor imperfection comes through. Unless you are working with a pristine floor with absolutely no imperfections, go with foam. Also, it is significantly louder. Vinyl flooring doesn't always sit on the floor on every square foot as it is floating, and not tied down. If you get a spot that bows up even 1mm, your eyes can't tell there is a bow, bit you can hear it slap your subfloor or cement. More on reddit.com

October 28, 2022 - I only worked in commercial flooring so we're talking hospitals, schools, military bases, government offices and such. So maybe a residential installer might want to "just do it"to get paid that day and feed his family and my boss and even customer's often wanted that as well. There was no incentive for me to take that risk with other people's safety. ... I use my Crain 5" scraper with a new blade to strip the pad/cork backing off.

r/DIY on Reddit: Vinyl plank flooring with underlayment attached
May 15, 2023 -
Hey all,
First time homeowner here looking to do my first ever renovation on my new condo. I'm planning on installing some vinyl plank flooring that already has an underlayment attached. My question is whether this is enough or if it would be wise to add another later of underlayment (floors are concrete underneath). Second question, would it impact the foot feel in any negotiable way? (I e make it a softer step)
Thanks in Advance!

I don’t know about adding additional other than other things might look funky if you do too much because you’re raising the height of the floor. I will say I have Lifeproof LVP on a concrete slab and on 2nd floor of my house and the first floor is significantly harder. It’s not unbearable at all but if your back is ever hurting and you need some full support all the way across, it’ll do the job lmao

Pre-Attached Underlayment: The Pros and Cons - MP Global Products, LLC
July 22, 2025 - Meanwhile, redoing your home’s floors still often tops the list, taking a ton of time to get done right. The good news, though, is that using pre-attached underlayment can reduce this to a certain extent. Although separate underlayment doesn’t take long to install, pre-attached will save you some time. Since you don’t have to put down an entirely separate layer of padding, you can reduce the time needed to lay down your vinyl, hardwood, or laminate.
