Source: I sell flooring. Product thickness can be misleading because with vinyl planks, there are 3 different types of product. Glue down doesn't need to be very thick. 3mm is plenty. It's what's used in commercial applications. Floating SPC is next, between 4-7mm. It's loaded with limestone and is very dense. It can handle heavy furniture and high heels (point load) and will fair better with dropped items. Floating WPC is usually thickest, between 6-9mm. It's quiet, and easier on bare feet. However, it is less dense, so it doesn't hold up to the heavier loads like SPC does. Wear layer thickness is important. 6 mil is trash. 12 mil is good for low traffic situations. 20 mil and higher are for high traffic floors. It doesn't prevent scratches. It protects the image layer. It's like the clear coat on your car. If you look in the right light, you see a multitude of micro-scratches. Without the clear coat, your color coat would get trashed. 20mjl is a good wear layer. 4MM is middle of the road thickness. The stuff I used from LLFlooring is 7MM +1 pad. I’ve used 2MM before and would never recommend that, it rises at the seams. Depending where you are using it, should be alright.

"LVP Flooring: the only thing that matters is the thickness of the wear layer"
There are a lot of things that factor into the quality and price of any flooring product. What you have to determine is what are the most important aspects to you? Is the wear layer important? Probably. But it’s more important to a family of 5 doing the entire house than it is to a couple with no children or pets doing just the bedrooms. One aspect most buyers don’t consider is the visual. Longer, wider planks look great but cost more. Visual details like embossing, beveled edges and fewer pattern repeats make a better looking floor but customers rarely request that, probably because they don’t know it matters. A thicker floor will be quieter, warmer, more comfortable and makes a more even transition to most other types of flooring. And to answer the bonus question, they’re also quieter. Selecting flooring is about much more than specs. Color, style, warmth and comfort all matter, even if you’re not thinking about them as much while shopping. More on reddit.com

r/Flooring on Reddit: What is more important for Vinyl Planks "product thickness" or "wear layer thickness"??
October 18, 2024 -
I see a lot of vinyl planks online stores that have the wear layer thickness in the description of the planks. Wouldn't the product thickness be more important? They give the product thickness further down the page but still could confuse people.
I don't know shit about flooring but it seems like listing the wear layer thickness (because it's the higher number) is intentionally misleading the customer. Or am I just an idiot?

The wear layer is the layer that is receiving wear, so why wouldn't you want that one to be higher?
