The trick to spend every cent in the prepaid cards are using them to pay for bills (phone, hydro, etc.) since you can always customize the amount of payment. Also if I need things from Amazon I usually just buy Amazon gift cards, no extra fee involved whatsoever and you get all the values of 5x points. Same for Apple gift cards and LCBO gift cards. In the US, most visa cards are declined if you charge more than is available on them. So, if you used 7.50 total in your first two purchases, you would have 2.50 left on your card. If you tried to charge 2.59, it would be declined for those 9 cents, rather than having a balance of 9 cents for you to pay. Is that what happened? More on reddit.com

I recently signed up for an Amex and have been trying to maximize my point generation. I normally shop for groceries at Walmart and not Sobeys. After reading through here, it seems that some grab prepaid credit cards from the 5x merchants to use in cases where gift cards aren’t available (ie. Walmart.) I’ve read about tampering issues with the cards which makes me hesitant to pick up a $500 card that sits on a front display. In theory it sounds like a great idea: the points earned offset the activation fee and you add on something small at checkout to offset the round number. Anyone have any advice? Thank you.

In theory, it's a great idea. Even after the activation fee, you can earn more than 3% cashback. However, you are right about the fraud. I was a regular prepaid card buyer from 5x points merchants, but eventually became a victim of tampering. Got myself a replacement card eventually but the process took over a month. Not worth the hassle for me to get few % more cashback. As other peope have mentioned, if you can find a merchant that stacks cards behind the counter, it might be worth buying from there as the risk will be considerably low.
