I had Fi for a long time--left, tried various other carriers, but ended up on Visible for the past 1.5 years. Visible is far better than Fi, at least for me. Fi is not inexpensive. I was using a mere 500 megabytes each month and my bill was still ~$28 after taxes. Those prices haven't changed ($20 for voice/text + $5 for 500mb + tax). Fi was often glitchy as hell--it sticks to towers with poor signals in lieu of better ones. The mod of the old r/ProjectFi sub (dmziggy) actually sold an app to force a change. I could go on, but unless you're travelling internationally, there's literally no benefit to being on Fi. It's also dangerous. I know you might doubt me on this, but I swear it's 100% true--if you ever have to dispute a charge with Fi (e.g. not receiving a phone you ordered) they will lock you out of your entire Google account. No Gmail, no Google Sheets, no Google Photos--you're locked out of all your Google accounts. This has been well documented over the years with Fi--since it's Google, if you dispute a charge or issue a charge-back on a credit card, they will fuck you so hard your head will be spinning. Visible might have some issues with customer service and deprioritization, but--for the most part--those are minor. Of course everything depends on the Verizon LTE signal where you live as well as the network congestion. But Visible works pretty damn well and it's also the least expensive "unlimited" plan on the market. EDIT: I'd also add that porting your number to GV and then using the GV app on your phone will get you most of the "benefits" of Fi. That's what I did--I don't even know my Visible assigned phone number. Answer from zerozed on reddit.com

r/Visible on Reddit: Visible Versus Google FI
January 8, 2025 -

We have 3 lines that we need to move from Xfinity (VZ network). Looking at Visible 3 x $30 V+ lines or $90 per month total.

Comparing to Google FI Simply Unlimited (TM Network), $30 per line + taxes..probabaly about $105 total per mo. FI will give us $800 phone subsidy per line over 24 months (Galaxy or Pixel phones)..$2400 total subsidy/ 24 months = $100 per mo..This seems to make the FI deal pretty compelling given we will pay just over $2,500 for the service over the 24 month period.

Big differences I see are VZ v. TM network..TM has more/better 5G where we live, VZ broader coverage. FI is priority data and 35 GB on this plan. FI does not sell iPhones..we all currently use Android. FI includes Samsung & Pixel smartwatch connectivity.

While I really like the idea of Visible v. Verizon..I'm having a hard time ignoring the value of the new phones with FI..all our phones now are 2-4 years old. I posted on the Visible forum for perspective from others who have considered or had FI service? Which would you choose in my situation?

My wife has Fi on her android and it works well for her. I have an iPhone and Fi is practically unusable. Just a second class citizen and slow rates and hampered performance. Visible+ is much better on an iPhone

I'd go with Visible if your budget allows for it. Google Fi works best if you're not an Apple user, especially since Apple Watch connectivity isn't supported despite them offering smartwatch connectivity for free. If you're, say, a Google Pixel user, then the service will work better than for others. They do, however, offer free tablet SIMs for data, so you can directly get coverage from your iPad instead of needing to hotspot from your phone. Visible does not offer this tablet benefit. What I can chime in here with is regarding service coverage. I have T-Mobile and Verizon via personal/work lines. I can vouch for T-Mobile having superior 5G coverage and speeds where available. If you're in metro areas (cities, suburbs), T-Mobile will serve you very well with blazing fast speeds. If you live or travel through the exurbs or rural areas often, T-Mobile will be lackluster in comparison to Verizon's network, with T-Mobile either lacking coverage entirely or having unusable network speeds for data. E.g., I live in the city and T-Mobile provides me with 400+Mbps down, while Verizon only shows 50+Mbps down during testing. Both are using 5G, but I guess T-Mobile just has more capacity here with 5G where I am. Realistically, both are very usable speeds that you won't really care for outside of testing. T-Mobile also begins to show its weaknesses if you need coverage indoors, especially deep inside buildings. I know it's a band/frequency issue, but Verizon often has better indoor coverage for various reasons. So, if you're often indoors with no access to WiFi, Verizon also wins here. I love T-Mobile and never plan to leave since we're on a grandfathered family plan for cheap (6x lines for $150, everything unlimited). But, if I were to start over again with no grandfathered discounts, I'd probably go for Visible.

I had Fi a few years ago and I loved the service, but traveling for work meant I used more data and Google Fi is based on how many gigs a month you use, and I used to much data.. Now I've been on visible since day one of Android availability, and while there have been a couple hiccups (setting up service, random outages, etc.), I have never been happier with a service provider than I am now.

r/GoogleFi on Reddit: My GoogleFi Experience: Ported Out to Visible after 1 year
November 4, 2024 -

I wanted to share my experience with Google Fi after using it for about a year on both the Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro. Overall, I have no major complaints about the service - it worked smoothly for the most part in the US and even overseas. However, a few things ultimately led me to switch to Visible.

Pros:

- Reliable Coverage (Mostly): Throughout the year, I rarely had issues with service, even when traveling internationally. During my trips Google Fi worked well in both Europe and the Middle East, which was impressive.

Cons:

- Unexpected Coverage Gaps: During a trip to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, I had full bars, but data, texts, and calls just wouldn't go through, even though the Google Fi coverage map showed it as a serviced area. My family on Verizon had no issues, which made me rethink Fi’s reliability in remote areas.

Minor issues:

- Encrypted Calls Between Fi Users: Not an issue but this was advertised as a feature, and it didn’t work for me, even with both parties on compatible Android devices.

- Spam Blocker: The spam blocking was ineffective. I’d still get a flood of spam calls unless I turned on the “contacts only” option from setting, which is too restrictive.

- Lack of HD Call Quality: Call quality on Google Fi was fine but noticeably lacking compared to the HD/HD+ quality I used to get on carriers like T-mobile/verizon. It wasn’t a huge deal, but once you experience HD+ quality with noise cancellation, you will definitely notice it.

Why I Switched:

Cost/Value: This was the main reason for switching. While Google Fi’s flexible plan was great for light usage, the $10 per GB charge on top of the $20 base fee (plus taxes) added up fast, even though I spend most of my time on Wi-Fi at home and work. Constantly checking my data to avoid extra charges was annoying.

With Visible, I pay less than I did on Fi’s flexible plan and don’t have to worry about data usage limits. The coverage has been solid, too. I would not have consider switching out of Google Fi if they had better pricing for single-line users. Currently, to get decent discounts, you need multiple lines, which doesn’t work for everyone. This is where Visible really stands out as it offers much better value for single-line users

I also switched from FI to Visible (in August) . Mainly because I switched jobs over the pandemic and my international travel greatly reduced... plus the availability of zillions of eSim providers has reduced the benefit of FI's international capabilities. That said, I think I need to challenge a few of your issues: For encrypted calling... there is no way I'd trust the provider, no matter who they are. If I want encrypted calls, I'm using Signal. Spam Blocker: - I've had equally bad luck with every single provider I've tried. Frankly the bulk of my spam calls call from spoofed numbers, not the well known spam numbers most blockers are effective against. Coverage Gaps - Keep in mind, Visible doesn't have access to ALL of Verizon's domestic roaming partners. This means there may be remote areas where you will NOT get the same service as someone on postpaid verizon. Over the course of the past 4 years, I've tried literally ever carrier in every place I generally spend time. I can't say one is better than the other. It really depends on where and what I prioritize. For example... at my house, AT&T has the best data throughput. Visible is tolerable and T-Mobile(FI) sucks. At a doctor's office AT&T has zero coverage, Verizon and T-Mo are great. In a local park, Only Verizon has coverage. Where my kid takes violin, only AT&T has coverage... you get the point. Short of running multiple providers via eSim, there is no perfect coverage service. It varies person to person, and even situation to situation. Cost - I agree with you there, and this was a big motivator for me to move. I'm paying $35/line (all in with no added taxes fees) for visible, and have unlimited data (50GB priority, thereafter just deprioritized not throttled) + I get service on my apple watch. For me this is a better deal given my new circumstances. I DO miss having pSims for things like my iPad, but Visible's unlimited hotspot makes up for that. I'm definitely still a huge FI fan. My last experience with FI was this summer when my family were in China and Japan and FI gave us seamless service everywhere we went.

Signed up for free trial but could not add Apple Watch plan so used referral code to sign up for base plan with Apple Watch. Have been with Google Fi for almost 2 yrs. Network signal seems to be better but cellular data show similar speeds. Main reason for switching would be the option to have Apple Watch plan for $5 vs no Watch plan at all with Fi. I will miss the data only sims and occasional international data roaming from Fi.

Anyone else who has made similar switch recently? How has your experience been with Visible vs Fi?

r/Visible on Reddit: Switched from Google Fi to Visible and I'm happy
December 28, 2023 -

I had Google Fi before and it was horrible, there were many dead zones around town and I was paying $55/mo (after taxes/fees) for 35 gb of 5G data and unlimited 2G data afterwards.

My new Visible+ plan is $35/mo for two years ($45/mo afterwards) for unlimited high speed data and 10 mbps hotspot and I am much happier with it. Not only am I paying $20 less per month, but there are also no more dead zones around town and I can effectively get a signal everywhere I go.

So yeah, Visible is pretty decent. Well, at least it is better than Google Fi AKA garbage. As someone who hates technology and prefers offline connection to doomscrolling, I am happy to be able to spend less on tech while getting better service when I need it, such as getting an Uber home from the club.

r/NoContract on Reddit: Choosing between GoogleFi, Visible, and US Mobile
March 6, 2025 -

Hello, friends. I have done some research, but feel I could use a second opinion (or third). I have been leaning towards GoogleFi given their 50% off BYOD promotion, and I need to decide in the next day or so.

A few relevant points:

  • I have a new iPhone I purchased unlocked after a trade-in, and I have an Apple Watch (though care very little at the moment about a cellular connection - just a nice to have). I noticed GoogleFi does not currently support Apple Watches but that's not a dealbreaker.

  • I don't use a hotspot much, but decent data allowance and speeds are nice to have. I have Google Fiber at home, and don't work or steam too frequently away from home without WiFi access.

  • I only have one line - no benefit to bundling lines at the moment.

  • I am switching from an unlimited AT&T plan that costs roughly $100 per month, and I average less than 10GB per month of data. But even with somewhat reasonable data usage per month, I am ok paying for the higher tier of these plans (and sticking to options that are never deprioritized) because I will still save ~$70 per month, and I won't worry about overage.

  • Not too concerned about international coverage. I plan to just get an eSim when traveling to Europe (~10 days).

I figure it's worth it to try out GoogleFi with this promotion. T-Mobile in my area looks as good as any, and AT&T has really sucked in my neighborhood specifically. If I find I hate it, I can cancel any time. Then I would probably give Visible a shot next. If GoogleFi works well, I have $25 monthly plan for at least 18 months.

Any alternative ideas or approaches?

Google fi has the worst premium data plan, only 50gb full speed then 2g speeds after. Their main perk is that you can use all of your data allotment every month internationally in 200+ supported countries, which is the best international roaming by any carrier currently. Visible with their new plans have the best data plans, with unlimited everything including hotspot data for all plans, with 5mbps hotspot on the cheapest plan, 10mbps hotspot on the plus plan, and 15mbps hotspot on the pro plan. They include Apple Watch lines, with the pro plan having it no extra cost. Usmobile is the most contentious pick here, because they tend to change terms and conditions rather blazing fast depending on their needs (like the recent dark star/att network hotspot controversy). I hard disagree with the notion they’re bait and switch, I just think that they think they can be super generous for some time, before realizing some people will just take and take at everyone’s expense until forced to stop. But all that aside, their offerings especially on the att network are really competitive for an mvno, with warp(Verizon) and light speed(T-Mobile) having up to 100gb full speed data before a 1mbps throttle on premium plan. On the starter plan, it’s 35gb before the throttle. With both of their networks, hotspot is up to 50gb of the full speed data buckets available for hotspot, and 10gb on starter. On darkstar(att), you get unlimited on the premium plan with up to 200gb for hotspot, and 70gb before the throttle for starter with 20gb available for hotspot. Apple Watch plans are available on the warp network and I think dark star too. So for you, I’d give visible the primary choice with usmobile around them as a viable option.

I'm on visible, obviously as I'm here, but I'm getting about damn tired of this whole 'calls not going through' issue. Restarting, or airplane mode off/on, is just not a reasonable resolution. What if I need to call 911...but this is getting really shitty. I tried Fi years ago, and it was pretty awful. I went running back to verizon. However, now, its 20 bucks a month for 4 lines.....that's visible pricing right there. But is anyone coming or going from Fi that can state how they are doing? I know it was sprint/tmo at the time I tried, which was awful. And I know tmo doesnt go where I do some times, but with as integrated as they are with wifi, and calling over wifi, it might be OK.

r/GoogleFi on Reddit: Should I Stay With Fi?
January 29, 2024 -

Hello everyone! I've been a Fi customer for... I honestly don't know how long now. When my brother and I first switched it offered pretty great value - we were heavy data users and the unlimited plan, at the time, gave us the best value for our use cases that we could squeeze into our grad school/college student budgets. Over the years, though, it feels like the overall experience with Fi isn't as great as it was when we first switched over, and other carriers seem to have become more competitive on price.

I think that one of my major pain points has been a noticable decline in coverage. The loss of US Cellular was a major issue for me, as I live in an area that's on the fringes of T-Mobile coverage. This has been a particular issue because I have the misfortune of being stuck with Spectrum as the only ISP available to me that offers speeds greater than 15 mb (I live in a rural area), and I depend on the ability to use my phone as a hotspot whenever I experience an outage with Spectrum during the workday (I have a wfh job).

In light of all this, I've been looking at other options. I work in education, which allows me to get a $10/discount on service with Verizon and AT&T. That should bring the price per line (my brother, parents, and myself) down to about the same as I'm paying for Unlimited Plus with Fi. Additionally, AT&T is currently running a promo where you can trade in any Pixel device for a free Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel Watch 2, which is a nice bonus.

I suppose the heart of my question here is whether or not I'm missing something. The major carriers aren't as miserly with their data caps as they used to be, and I don't travel abroad enough to take advantage of those perks of Fi. Is there something I've overlooked that may be worth taking into consideration? Has anyone switched away from Fi and regretted the move?

Hi friends I have a question, I’m leaving Sprint at the end of the month and I would love to know if I should make the switch to Google-Fi or Visible, I’d be paying basically the same with Google Fi is I bring my phone but I need a hotspot to watch TV and stream because I live in a rural area where it’s almost impossible to get internet service. Also my fiancé is over seas and we need to be able to video chat without problems. I’ve been reading some posts about the tightened restrictions on MBPS from Visible and now I’m wondering if it’s even worth it. I’d only be using 2 devices with my hotspot (Roku and Laptop) but I have some other devices that I’d like to be able to use but aren’t a huge need I.e Alexa and a Withings smart scale that connects to my phone but also needs wi-fi to work appropriately. Any experience or feedback would be helpful TIA.

r/Visible on Reddit: Global Pass Experiences - Considering a switch from Google Fi
August 14, 2024 -

Sorry if there is a thread on this already, I couldn't find one (but I did find comments in various threads that have me concerned so I figure it might help others if we consolidate into a single thread).

My wife and I are considering a switch from Fi to Visible (+Pro Annual). Most carriers are questionable value for just the two of us which makes this appealing and the 24 Global Pass days should about cover our annual needs (even at $10 a day for overage it's still a steal compared to our annual spend on Fi).

However, I have seen some comments indicating that layovers/travel to different zones have started a new Global Pass day which completely changes the appeal here. Is there any actual official documentation of how Global Pass works anywhere?

We travel to Australia once a year which often has us going 1-2 random countries on the way. How are we supposed to navigate that with Global Pass? Just turn it off and only turn it on when we land in Australia? Right now, I can use Fi wherever we are with no penalty. Just seems like while Visible might be a fantastic option for us generally, we would lose some serious flexibility when we travel despite the 24 Global Pass days that come with the +Pro annual plan. I also read comments where people had left Global Pass enabled, but cellular data off (ie. WiFi only) yet WiFi calling/txting triggered Global Pass activation.

Does anyone have any official language/documentation on this or can we establish concrete experiences in this thread?

Thanks!

Hey there! This is Vishia from Visible. We are thrilled to hear that you are taking interest in the Visible family. Excellent question. If you travel within the same zone, you do not need to pay the different fee. On the other hand, if you travel to more than one Global Pass-compatible country on the same day, you will be charged for a new 24-hour session once your device initiates another network connection. To Avoid unwanted charges: Keep your device’s airplane mode enabled until you’re ready for your Global Pass session to start. Enable airplane mode before the active Global Pass session expires. Alternatively, you can also go into your account via the app or a web browser and disable Global Pass (you can re-enable the feature later, when ready). I travel a lot internationally; I just switched from T-Mobile to Visible+ plan in March. Absolutely love it! Then Pro plan was announced after I signed up and prepaid for the year. If you have an eSim phone, you can add other eSims to your phone if you know in advance what countries you're going to be traveling through. (Your phone must also be unlocked, obviously. For reference, I have an iPhone 14 currently that's a few years old.) I use Gigsky usually and I just purchase the data ahead of time when they have a sale, since you have 1 year to activate and use it. (There are others, but that is the company I use.) You'll want to have your travel eSIM set up before you leave the USA. Once it's set up, you can switch the plans via an app for different countries. I usually leave my phone in airplane mode and switch eSims from Visible to Gigsky when I land before turning off airplane mode. Then I go to the app and activate that country's plan. I also have WiFi calling turned off in my phone settings as an extra precaution. For example, my next trips coming up are Turkey, Czech Republic, Austria, and France and I was just in Mexico last weekend (which is already included.) France is an added stop so I will use some of my Global Data Plan for that. I'm also going to Amsterdam in the fall for 4 days and will use my Global Data Plan for that. I'm very happy with Visible and I have no regrets about switching. Check out Gigsky or some other travel eSims for information but I think you will be really happy with Visible and using a travel eSim if the Pro plan doesn't cover enough days on it's own for you.

r/GoogleFi on Reddit: Switching From Fi to Visible
June 8, 2025 -

I've had Google Fi for almost a decade and was overall happy with the service. I'll never forget the first moment of landing in another country, turning on my phone, and the magic of having data connection already.

The landscape of MVNOs and international data has changed significantly since then, and the gradual price increases finally got to me. The things that had made Fi great:

  • reasonable data pricing and tethering options

  • easy international data access

  • free connection for (Android) smart watches

The default nowadays is unlimited data (at least up to a certain amount before throttling). Pay by GB is still $10 per GB after a decade. Fi obviously has unlimited plans but unless you have 4 people in a group plan, other MVNOs have much better pricing. Tethering with pay by GB is not realistic and the cheapest unlimited does not offer tethering at all.

Esims have changed the game here. The truth here is that getting unlimited data access in a country is very easy now; you can prepurchase an esim and have it on your phone (which most phones have 2 esim slots) to have access upon arrival. Prices tend to be incredibly cheap. Additionally, many apps in a specific country require a phone number of that country, so you are out of luck in using Fi for anything besides data.

A lot of MVNOs have not offered support for Android smart watches or offered to bundle a connection. But Visible just started supporting Pixel watches!

For a group plan of just 2 people, it was cheaper to pay for what we needed (2 phones, 1 smart watch) with unlimited data. They have ongoing discounts as well that reduce the price further. Previous Fi total was ~$100 a month including taxes. Current Visible total is $70 a month including taxes (and not counting any referral discounts). Plus, with a $15 discount for FiOS subscribers, basically we are paying $55 a month for unlimited data and tethering. When we travel, we will just get a local data plan (although Visible also offers subscribers to + and Pro a number of free global days).

And while I never had terrible interactions with Fi support, Visible's customer support has been refreshingly good -- after being disconnected from chat, the agents called me back multiple times to make sure my issue was resolved.

Fi has pretty sweet deals and discounts for new customers, especially around the holidays. It's too bad that this doesn't extend to existing customers. I might rotate back for such a deal (especially when looking to upgrade my phone).

Happy to answer any questions!
