Visual Intelligence: How to look up info with iPhone AI tool | Cult of Mac
July 12, 2025 - Apple’s new Visual Intelligence feature provides a quick way to find information just by pointing an iPhone 16’s camera at an object in the real world. Then you can ask ChatGPT to explain what you’re looking at, do a reverse image search to find products and look things up visually, get information on a business as you walk down the street, quickly add events to your calendar and identify plants and animals.

r/ios on Reddit: Visual Look up doesn’t work?
September 24, 2023 -
Running iOS17, set location and language to the English (US), even using a VPN set to the US I get nothing, just the standard information symbol.
Language was previously set to English (UK) and UK region
Is there something I haven’t turned on? Even checking against a very clear picture of a dog with nothing else in frame it just doesn’t do anything.

I think this is a geo-based feature, I'm from Colombia, and I have my phone's region is set to US, English language, never has worked. But every time I travel to the US it magically works, all of a sudden.

This may be the reason why it's not working for you: In order to enable Visual Look Up, you have to enable the "Show in Look Up" setting under "content from apple" in your "Siri & Search" settings. It took me forever to learn this as well, but this setting needs to be turned on in order for this to work. Hopefully this helps!

August 16, 2023 - You'll know if the iPhone can identify something in the photo by looking at the tiny information icon (a small "i" in a circle). If you see a pair of stars on the icon, that means you can use Visual Lookup. In iOS 17, the icon gets a bit of a visual upgrade, transforming the "I" into a plant, dog, or little monument, depending on what the Visual Lookup detects.
