Starting with VS 2022, the IDE itself is 64-bit, which means it can use more memory, handle larger solutions more smoothly, reduce slowdowns and crashes when working with big projects. The build tools, compilers, toolsets are still compatible with building 32-bit or 64-bit applications; what changed is mainly how the IDE operates internally. This results in a more stable environment especially for developers working with large code bases or many extensions.

Visual Studio is a complete IDE out of the box: built-in support for project/solution management, GUI designers, integrated debugging & profiling, and tighter coupling with Microsoft tooling. Visual Studio Code is lighter, more modular, relies heavily on extensions, and tends to have faster startup and less UI clutter. For front-end web, scripting, or mixed small tasks many prefer VS Code, but for heavier desktop apps and .NET UI work, Visual Studio usually wins.

This can happen if project settings aren't fully consistent, or if some of the linked libraries or included components are targeting Win32. Also, even if the UI indicates x64, some build configurations or dependencies may still be pointing to a 32-bit toolchain or library, or the project default hasn't been updated. Carefully check project & solution configuration, library references, and platform targets for every component.
