Yes. You can download Visual Studio Code on supported Chromebooks using Crostini (Linux Support for Chrome OS).
Here's how:
- Enable Linux Development Environment by going in Chrome OS Settings, scrolling to the
Developerssection, and clickingLinux Development Environment: Turn On. - Wait for the Linux VM to download. When it finishes, the Terminal app will open. If necessary, click
penguinto open the terminal. - Type the following two commands, each followed by pressing the enter key to update the Linux VM:
sudo apt update -y;
sudo apt upgrade -y;
- Navigate to this page: https://code.visualstudio.com/download, and choose the
.deboption (if you have an ARM CPU chromebook, choose the ARM option). Save the file.debinto theLinuxfolder which is now in your Files. - Run the following command, replacing FILENAME.deb with the actual name of the file you just downloaded:
sudo apt install -y ./FILENAME.deb - Visual Studio Code should now be installed. If you look in the launcher, there will be a folder called
Linux apps. Inside, there should be VS Code.

Learning with VS Code on Chromebooks
November 3, 2021 - While Chromebooks can run VS Code just fine, even on lower-powered versions like the one I'm testing with, sometimes you need to use faster machines for your development, with more memory and/or a faster CPU.

r/chromeos on Reddit: Anyone use vscode via linux on their chromebook?
October 11, 2023 -
Hello, I am a noob/hobbyist trying to do some javascript/html learning on my cheap little Lenovo Chromebook.
So far I've run into several issues, the main one I can't get past is this: vscode will not run my code because it can't open any browsers, likewise I can't seem to install any browsers onto my little ChromeOS Linux environment.
Please forgive my ignorance as I am a noob at this stuff. If there's any kind of guide or reading you can point me to on how to get this started, I'd really appreciate it.

Does anyone use their Chromebook to code?
I do. I use the Linux container, installed VSCode, Pycharm and Android Studio, but i find myself just using the Caret app from the chrome web store and the terminal to run my programs. I preferred it over my windows desktop. I use an Acer Spin CP713-2W. More on reddit.com

VS Code on Chromebook: Installation and Learning Guide
2 weeks ago - ChromeOS creates a Debian-based Linux environment in which VS Code runs as a desktop application. Microsoft provides .deb installers for x64, ARM32 and ARM64 devices, so you must download the version that matches your Chromebook’s processor. You can also use the browser-based version at vscode.dev if you do not want to install the desktop application.

Coding on a Chromebook: The Complete 2026 Guide | Cosyra
June 27, 2026 - A Chromebook is, above all, an excellent browser, and the browser-editor path leans into that. GitHub Codespaces and vscode.dev run in Chrome with no local setup. GitHub's own marketing says you can "spin up Codespaces from any device with internet access," and a Chromebook qualifies.

Note: on a Chromebook, use 🔍+<8th button in the top row that's not ESC>. In most cases, this is the top row button that is the closest to be directly above the 8 key. Launch commands are the equivalent of F5 in Visual Studio: They launch some program or a debugger. Optionally, they can run some task defined in tasks.json. Launch commands can be run from the debug view (Ctrl+Shift+D). Open the file at .vscode/launch.json and adjust the example launch commands to your situation and needs (e.g., the value of “type” needs adjustment for Windows).
