As I see it, vscode.dev is just an online editor with no possibility for running code. Perhaps I have misunderstood its usage. GitHub Codespaces is a rather complete programming environment where you run a VS Code instance in what is probably a Linux virtual machine. There is not much I can do on my PC, which I can't also do in GitHub Codespaces. More on reddit.com

Both are VSCode in a browser. Both can be elevated into a fully integrated development environment via preinstalled GitHub Codespaces VSCode extension by selecting `>Codespaces Create New Codespace...` from the command palette. So what's their actual difference and why would I use one over another?

Who is the owner and what is the purpose of these projects?

Both are microsoft anyway ¯\_(ツ)_/¯, but is one from the github team, while the other from vscode team?

They are both the same project (VSCode in a web browser) github.dev just has some settings changed to better accommodate working in GitHub workspaces you can access it via pressing `.` while in GitHub I guess it might be hosted directly by GitHub? theres also insiders.vscode.dev for the insiders version of VSCode web

July 26, 2023 - Something else I find very confusing is that vscode.dev & github.dev are both free and run the editor fully locally in your browser. Github Codespaces on the other hand provisions a VM behind the scenes so you can run containers, build tooling and whatever else alongside the editor.

Hey everyone!

I know i’m going to sound pretty stupid for this but i’ve looked all over youtube and all of the videos are from years ago or don’t really explain it well in my opinion. Can someone here explain to me in the most basic terms how to use github and vs code together so that i’m able to access my code from both my laptop and desktop

Doesn't vscode come with git support out of the box? You can install gitlens and some other git extensions for additional features. You may only need the default features for what you are trying to accomplish. Set up everything. Create a github repository and they will provide a set of terminal commands which you need to copy paste in the terminal while in the current directory of the project. After that just open that project in vscode and you should be done. OR You can also do this in vscode itself without needing to type the commands in the terminal. You can initialize the repository, add a branch and then add remote in vscode. Now you can add, commit, push and pull. You have to do this for both your laptop and desktop if you want to access the code in both devices. Pull every time you switch your workspace (lap / desktop) to stay updated on changes made, add your new changes, commit, push and repeat.
