We want to renew our passports online, so we went to Walgreens to get the pictures taken and get a digital copy.
The process was great, we took the photos, received the two printed pictures (although we didn't need these).
But then when we downloaded the digital photos we were surprised, the digital photos were nowhere near the quality of the "cleaned up" printed photos. Asked the store people, and they explained that's how the system works and they can't manually pick the "cleaned up" photos to email.
I'm really surprised this is how it works, why doesn't Walgreens just send the "cleaned up" versions of the photos in email? Seems like it'll remove a lot of misunderstanding and confusion.

Because unfortunately Walgreens just started this within the past six months or so. And they don't give us an option to either for whatever reason. I'm surprised the company doesn't make customers pay for a digital tbh

According to policy, we’re not supposed to edit the photo. Many stores do, but technically edited photos violate the requirements of the passport office requirements. The original digital copy was the cropped 2x2 image you submitted on the kiosk. That was not compatible with the passport website. An update was made to the kiosk so that it now emails a copy of the original photo. These are also incompatible with the government website. The website needs the uncropped photo, but it needs the white balance and brightness adjustments. More on reddit.com

The official US travel.gov site requires the full photo. The resizing/editing is done on that site. That's why the digital copy is the full frame photo. If you want a digital version of the 2x2 photo you need to add a USB drive to the order for an additional $6. All of this info is available on the photo reference site. That store should be aware of this and should have explained it. I posted a sign in my lab explaining this. More on reddit.com

Stop editing the background, you're wasting your time. What you're doing is technically against the rules for passport photos anyways because it's digital alteration. If your backgrounds are coming out that dark even though you're using a white backdrop, use white balance on the kiosk. It takes a bit to figure out how to use it effectively, but eventually you'll be able to drastically improve the background in just seconds without having to manually erase the entire thing. The backgrounds don't have to be a perfect white to pass inspection. More on reddit.com
